BOWLING GREEN, OHIO - The Falcons showed flashes of solid play, but couldn't put it all together in a game against the Mid-American Conference favorite, Kent. The result was a 82-61 KSU win in the MAC opener for both teams.
Kent's duo of Dawn Zerman and Julie Studer worked the inside-outside game to near perfection, combining for 54 of the team's 82 points. Zerman had a game-high 28 points, while Studer scored 26.
The Falcons took the early lead as Afra Smith scored the first six points of the contest. Smith converted an old-fashioned three-point play just 10 seconds into the game, then hit a conventional trey, the first of her BG career, a minute later.
BG's last lead of the game came midway through the first half, as Sherry Kahle's triple gave the Brown and Orange a 20-19 lead. After Angie Farmer hit a "three" at the 4:24 mark, the KSU lead was 29-25. The Flashes, however, put the game out of reach, scoring the last 11 points of the first half and the first eight of the second. BGSU never got closer than 16 points in the second frame.
Studer and Zerman combined to score 30 of KSU's 40 first-half points, including 27 of the first 31 markers. No other Golden Flash player hit double digits in the game.
For the Falcons, Kahle's 15 points paced three double-digit scorers. Smith added 12 points, while Jaymee Wappes had 11 points and five rebounds. Wappes and Kahle each hit three three-pointers (Wappes was 3-of-4) as the Brown and Orange went 10-of-22 from long range. The Falcons hit just 12-of-34 two-point attempts, however, a percentage of just .353.
