Falcon Icers Face Ohio State In Home-And-Home Series

The Bowling Green State University hockey team suffered a 4-2 setback to visiting Miami University Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Falcons are now 3-3 in their last six contests and have been outscored 16-15. BG's last nine games have all been decided by two goals or less, with the Falcons compiling a 3-6 mark.
The Falcons will play host to Ohio State this Friday (Jan. 14) at the BGSU Ice Arena with face-off slated for 7:35 p.m. Saturday's rematch in Columbus is slated to start at 7:05 p.m.
UPCOMING GAMES ...
BG will play their final regular-season non-conference series the weekend of Jan. 21-22 when the Chargers of Alabama- Huntsville come to Bowling Green. UAH is coached by former Falcon icer Doug Ross (1973-75, 65-64--129 points).
The Falcons will play their final 12 regular season contests against CCHA members beginning with the Jan. 28-29 home series versus Northern Michigan.
THE COACH ...
Falcon mentor Buddy Powers moved into 84th place on the NCAA all-time win list with BG's victory over Union on Dec. 30. He trails current New Hampshire head coach Dick Umile. There have been more than 725 NCAA men's collegiate head hockey coaches.
Powers served as head coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for five seasons (1989-90 through 1993-94) prior to being named to his current position at Bowling Green on July 12, 1994. He spent one season as the head coach at Rochester Institute of Technology (1988-89) leading the Tigers to a second-place finish in the Division III national championships.
Powers has a 9-9-1 record against Ohio State after the Falcons won last year's season series with a 2-1 mark. Powers record at the BGSU Ice Arena against the Buckeyes is 6-4-0, while his record in Columbus is 3-5-1.
THE SERIES ...
Bowling Green leads the all-time series against Ohio State with an 82-44-4 mark. BGSU won last year's season series with a 2-1 record outscoring the Buckeyes 7-4. BG is 3-6-1 in the last 10 meetings against its long-time opponent.
The Falcons have a 50-16-2 record at home versus OSU, while recording a 31-25-2 mark in Columbus. Bowling Green is 1-3-0 in neutral site contests (three games at Joe Louis Arena, while the first neutral site meeting was in the 1972 Cleveland Festival Consolation game).
There have been 19 overtime games with OSU leading 8-7-4, while in the 33 one-goal contests, BG has an 18-15 advantage.
PREVIEWING UPCOMING OPPONENT ...
Ohio State split its two non-league home contests this past weekend defeating Colgate (3-1) but falling to Cornell (5-2).
The Buckeyes are led in scoring by junior wing Jean-Francois Dufour (9-15--24, 4 PPG), senior wing Eric Meloche (11-6--17, 6 PPG), freshman center Luke Pavlas (5-6--11) and senior defenseman Ryan Jestadt (2-9--11).
Senior goalie Ray Aho (7-11-2, 3.15, .907) has played all but 150 minutes this season after backing up the first All-American goalie in OSU history, Jeff Maund, the previous two seasons.
OSU has been outscored 73-50 in its 22 games this season, while converting on 19 of its 142 power-play chances (13.4%). The buckeye penalty killers have stopped 121 of its opponents 151 man-advantage opportunities (80.1%).
REVIEWING LAST SATURDAY ...
Bowling Green rallied from a 2-0 deficit after the first period to tie the game at two, but Miami scored twice in the final 17 minutes for a 4-2 triumph at the BGSU Ice Arena Saturday night.
Miami's Mark Shalawylo and Pat Leahy scored in the opening period, while BG's Grady Moore scored during a 5-on-3 Falcon power-play for the lone second period goal. Moore's fifth of the campaign was assisted by Michael Jones and Adam Edinger.
The Falcons tied the game at two on Ryan Fultz's power-play goal just 1:45 into the third period. Greg Day and Moore assisted on Fultz's fifth of the season.
Mike Glumac scored the game-winner at 3:29, while Nick Jardine added an insurance goal at 14:29.
BG goalie Tyler Masters turned aside 28 RedHawk shots, while Miami netminder David Burleigh made 14 saves. The Falcons scored on two of its eight power-play opportunities, while Miami converted on one of its six man-advantage chances.
FALCON NOTES ...
The Falcons have scored four power-play goals in the last three games (in 20 opportunities for 20% efficiency), after scoring one power-play goal in their previous four games (13 chances for 7.7% efficiency).
BG's first goal on Saturday came four seconds into a two-man power-play. Bowling Green has now scored four five-on-three power-play goals this year in 8:32, while yielding only three five-on-three power-play goals in 10:31.
Bowling Green's two longest active point streaks are by defenseman - three games each for Michael Jones (0-4--4) and Grady Moore (3-2--5). Moore has a point in seven of the last eight games scoring four goals and adding five assists for nine points. He had two points (both Oct. 29 vs. Alaska Fairbanks) in the first 10 games of the season. Moore leads BG with four power-play goals and six power-play points.
Senior center Adam Edinger has a point in five of his last seven contests recording nine points on three goals and six assists.
BG has lost 16 man-games this season to injury with six different players not dressing due to an injury.
BG has outscored its opponents in the second period this season by a 23-15 margin, while being outscored 23-10 in the first period and 28-16 in third period.
