BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Carolyn Valade's second-half goal gave Ohio University a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Oct. 15). The Mid-American Conference match was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 7-7-0 overall on the year, including a 5-4 MAC record. OU improves to 7-8-0 and 5-4.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with Ohio having perhaps the best scoring chance in the first 45 minutes. With 5:30 left in that stanza, Christel Schiering lofted a shot, and BG sophomore goalkeeper Erika Flanders tipped it just enough to keep it out of the net. The ball glanced off the crossbar.
The Bobcats got on the board early in the second half, as Valade poked a shot home off a goalmouth scramble. Meghan McCoy was credited with an assist on the play.
The Falcons were unable to get a ball past OU's Anita Alexander, who made seven stops to earn the shutout. Flanders made eight saves in the Falcon net.
Ohio held a 15-12 edge in shots, including a 9-7 margin in shots on goal.
There were a total of 30 fouls called in the contest, with three yellow cards issued.
"Our program wasted a marvelous opportunity to make a statement today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "We had a chance to jump forward with all of our conviction and do something good.
"But, we didn't take our chances, didn't do the simple things and didn't have the wherewithal to make it happen today. We really didn't have many quality opportunities to score.
"It's a shame that we lost, but it is a lesson that we have got to learn."
The loss dropped the Falcons into a fifth-place tie in the conference, along with Ohio and Central Michigan, heading into the final weekend of league action. The complete standings are below.
Despite the loss to Ohio, the Falcons clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament. BGSU is eight points ahead of the ninth-place teams, Northern Illinois and Ball State, with only two matches (six possible points) remaining for each MAC school.
The top-eight MAC finishers will qualify for the tourney, which begins Oct. 31 with quarterfinal matches at campus sites.
The Brown and Orange will hit the road to conclude MAC regular-season play next weekend. BGSU will play at the University at Buffalo Friday (Oct. 22) before facing Kent State University Sunday (Oct. 24). BGSU then will conclude the regular season with a pair of non-conference home tilts the following weekend.
