CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University freshman Janssen Patton (Stone Mountain, Ga.) has been named the Mid-American Conference's Defensive Player of the Week, the league office has announced. Patton earns the award for the first time in his career.
Patton, making his first career start, had three interceptions in the Falcons' 18-11 victory at Kent State Saturday (Sept. 30). He returned one of those interceptions 74 yards for a touchdown.
Patton's other two thefts came deep in Falcon territory -- one at the BGSU five-yard line and one in the end zone, with the second coming in the game's final minutes. He also recovered a blocked punt at the KSU 12-yard line.
Patton's three-interception game tied a school record, and his TD return was the third longest interception return for a touchdown in BGSU history. He became the first Falcon to return a pick for a score since the 1995 season.
The Falcons (1-4 overall, 1-1 MAC) return home for Saturday's (Oct. 7) Homecoming contest against the University of Akron. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Perry Stadium.
