BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University hit over .300 for the fourth consecutive match en route to a three-game sweep of visiting Eastern Michigan University Friday evening (Oct. 20). The Falcons captured the Mid-American Conference match (15-12, 15-13, 15-7) at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
For the second consecutive match, freshman Susie Norris and sophomore Kristin Gamby tied for the kills lead for the Falcons, who improve to 13-7 overall and 6-5 in MAC action. Both Norris and Gamby had 15 kills in the victory to tie for match honors.
The first game of the night was close from start to finish, as neither team ever led by more than four points. The second game, however, was full of streaks, as the Falcons scored the first four points en route to an 8-2 lead, only to see it slip away.
In that second game, the Eagles rallied to within 8-6, let the Falcons score two-straight points, then scored the next six to take a 12-10 lead. But, a pair of Nadia Bedricky service aces sparked a game-ending 6-1 run.
BGSU opened game three on a 7-1 run, and - after the Eagles cut the lead to 7-4 - were never headed. The Falcons hit .362 in the third game.
Gamby had just two attack errors in 25 total attempts, for a match-best hitting percentage of .520. Gamby now has a total of 70 kills in the Falcons' last four matches, all wins. Prior to the current streak, she had a career total of 20 kills.
Norris hit .429 on the evening, as the Falcons hit .320 as a team.
Senior JoAnna Papageorgiou had 14 kills on the evening, while juniors Shyann Robinson and Caty Rommeck had 11 and 10, respectively. Defensively, Rommeck had a match-high 17 digs, as the Falcons held a 69-52 advantage in that department.
Norris and fellow freshman Bedricky each had 13 digs, and Robinson added 10 for her second double-double of the year. For Robinson, the dig total matched a BGSU career high.
Junior setter Natalie Becker had 53 assists, while Papageorgiou had five total blocks.
For the visitors, now 4-17 overall and 3-7 in MAC play, Sara Schaub had 12 kills and 16 digs to lead the team in both categories. She also had a match-best four service aces.
The Falcons have completed play for the weekend, and are idle until Friday, Oct. 27. On that date, the Brown and Orange will head to Kent to take on the Golden Flashes. BGSU will face Akron the following afternoon before returning home for a Nov. 3 battle vs. arch-rival Toledo. Start time for that match is 7:00 p.m. at Anderson.
