MADISON, Wis. - A trio of Bowling Green State University men's tennis players competed over the weekend at the ITA Region IV Championships in Madison, Wis. The action marked the completion of the fall season for the Falcons of fifth-year head coach Jay Harris.
The Falcons' doubles team of junior Vitek Wild and sophomore Geoff Hiscox had the most success at the weekend (Oct. 27-30) tournament, advancing to the round of 16. The Wild/Hiscox duo defeated Michigan's duo of Chris Shaya and Greg Novak by an 8-5 score to open doubles play. Then, the BG team defeated the 10th-seeded team of Butler's Brandon Currie and Jimmy Borendame, 8-6.
The duo's run came to an end at the hands of the second-seeded doubles team. The Illinois duo of Graydon Oliver and Amer Delic downed Wild and Hiscox by an 8-4 score. That Illini team advanced to the championship match and were slated to face another duo from UI in Monday's (Oct. 30) final.
In singles competition, all three Falcons fell in the first round against Big Ten Conference foes. Hiscox lost to Ohio State's Derek Defalco (6-4, 6-0), while Wild lost his match against Minnesota's Tyson Parry (6-3, 6-1). Sophomore Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo dropped his contest against Iowa's Jake Wilson in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).
The Falcons are now idle until a Jan. 27, 2001, match against Dayton.
