Men's Tennis Has Successful Home Debut

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team had a successful home debut for the 2000-2001 season, as the Falcons hosted the BGSU/Keefe Invitational at a chilly Keefe Courts (Oct. 6-8). No team scores were kept, but the Falcons lost to an opposing school just once the entire weekend.
BGSU competitors captured all three singles flights, as well as one doubles flight. The other doubles level, which was not completed, will feature a pair of BGSU teams in the championship match.
Capital, Dayton, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure and Xavier joined the Falcons at the Keefe Invite.
Junior Vitek Wild won the top flight, as the Falcons swept the top-four spots in the 16-player flight. Wild defeated sophomore Geoff Hiscox in the championship. Both Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo, a sophomore, and junior Mike Kossoff advanced to the semifinal round before losing to fellow Falcons. Lopez-Acevedo prevailed in the third-place match.
In the B flight, freshman Nick Moxley defeated senior Brandon Gabel to win the title. Sophomore Peter Gardonyi also competed at that level, placing fifth.
Sophomore Micael Lopez-Acevedo won the C flight with a championship-round win over junior Ed Kuresman.
In doubles action, the teams of Gabel/Wild and N. Lopez-Acevedo/Hiscox each advanced to the final of the A flight. The latter team defeated Kossoff and Moxley in the semifinals.
The championship match of the A flight was not played, and will be contested on Tuesday (Oct. 10). The Kossoff/Moxley duo took third place in the flight.
BGSU's lone B-flight team, Micael Lopez-Acevedo and Gardonyi, went 3-0 to win the flight.
In all, the Falcons' singles competitors combined to go 27-7, with six of those losses coming to other BGSU players. BG singles players went a combined 21-1 on the weekend.
In doubles play, the Falcons combined to go 12-1, with the lone loss coming when one BGSU duo defeated another.
BGSU will return to action on Friday (Oct. 13) at the Rocket Indoor in Toledo.
