RICHMOND, Ky. - A 40-16 run by Eastern Kentucky University propelled the host Lady Colonels to an 89-61 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Tuesday night (Nov. 21). The non-conference game was held at EKU's McBrayer Arena.
The Falcons drop to 1-1 on the young season, while EKU improves to 2-1.
The Lady Colonels led for the entire game, and held a 12-point lead on three occasions in the first half before settling for an eight-point margin at the intermission, 41-33.
The Falcons still trailed by eight points with nearly five minutes gone in the second half before cutting that deficit in half. Redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a layup to bring BG within 46-40 at the 15-minute mark. Then, after EKU's Charlotte Sizemore split a pair of free throws, Falcon senior Angie Farmer hit a three-pointer from the left corner.
The Colonels converted a layup, but senior Afra Smith hit a jumper from the top of the key to cut the EKU lead to 49-45 with 13:50 remaining. From there, however, it was all Colonels.
The hosts scored the game's next eight points, six on a pair of three-point field goals from Synisha Smith, to take a 12-point lead. BGSU would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the night.
EKU's Smith hit all seven of her field-goal attempts on the evening, including four shots from three-point land, en route to a game-high 18 points. She scored 14 points in the second half, including all four of her treys in a 2:10 span. The last of those three-pointers gave EKU a 14-point lead with 11:30 remaining.
Sophomore Kim Griech got the Falcons within 11 points, hitting a triple at the 11:10 mark to make the score 63-52. Then, however, the hosts reeled off the next 16 points. When Teresa McNair's driving layup found net, the Falcons trailed, 79-52, with 6:09 remaining.
In addition to Smith, three other EKU players had double-digit scoring nights. McNair and Candice Finley each scored 14 points, while Zoey Artist had 10.
For the Falcons, junior Dana Western was the lone double-digit scorer, with 11 points off the bench. Western was 5-of-8 from the field.
Freshmen Kelly Kapferer and Lindsay Austin had nine and seven points, respectively. Kapferer also had two blocked shots on the evening.
Brown and junior Francine Miller each had five rebounds to lead the Brown and Orange. EKU's McNair had a game-high nine caroms, as the Colonels held a 44-40 edge in that department.
For the Falcons, Smith had a career-high seven assists, more than doubling her previous single-game best in that department (three on three occasions).
The hosts shot 46.6% from the field, while the Falcons converted at a 36.5% rate.
BGSU will return to action this weekend, playing two games at the Lady Tiger Classic. The Falcons will face Charleston Southern in Friday (Nov. 24) action, beginning at 3:00 p.m. Host Auburn will meet IUPUI in the day's first game, a 1:00 p.m. start. The consolation and championship contests are scheduled for 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., respectively, on Saturday (Nov. 25).
