THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, after opening the season with four games in an eight-day span, will play just one game this week. The Falcons (2-2) will host the University of Detroit Mercy in a Saturday (Dec. 2) contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena (5,000).
Following the UDM game, the Falcons will resume a busy schedule, as Saturday's contest begins a two-week stretch which sees BGSU play six games. The Falcons will return to the road to face St. Bonaventure Tuesday, Dec. 5. Starting time for that game is 7:00 p.m.
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 26-33. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 208-152 (.578). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 2-2 record on the young season, having split a pair of games at Auburn's Kroger Classic last weekend (Nov. 24-25). The Falcons topped Charleston Southern by an 80-76 count Friday (Nov. 24), before falling to the nationally-ranked hosts, 94-61, the following day.
The Falcons opened the 2000-01 campaign with a 95-88 win over Youngstown State on Nov. 18. In that game, four of the Falcons' five starters hit double digits in the scoring department.
Last Tuesday (Nov. 21), however, the Brown and Orange fell at Eastern Kentucky by an 89-61 final. The hosts went on a game-ending 40-16 run to break a four-point game wide open.
Junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 16.0 points per game, while senior Angie Farmer also is in double digits, averaging 11.3 points.
Junior Dana Western is third on the squad, with 7.5 points per game off the bench, while freshman Lindsay Austin (6.3 ppg), senior Afra Smith and sophomore Kim Griech (6.0 ppg each) are close behind.
Miller (7.0 rpg) currently leads the team in rebounding, followed by redshirt freshman Pam Brown (5.8 rpg) and true freshman Kelly Kapferer (4.5 rpg). Miller and Austin are tied for the team assist lead, averaging 2.75 helpers each, while Smith (2.5 apg) is third on the team.
Miller and Austin also are tied for the team lead in steals (1.5 spg), while Miller's four blocks in four games paces the Brown and Orange in that category.
BGSU is shooting .403 from the floor, while the opponents have a field-goal percentage of .407. The Falcons are shooting .808 from the free-throw line, having made 80 charity tosses in 99 attempts through four games. The Falcons are shooting .378 from three-point range and averaging 7.75 triples per game, while the foes are shooting .244 from behind the arc.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

THE SERIES: The Falcons trail Detroit, 8-6, in the all-time series between the schools, and the Titans broke a four-game Falcon winning streak with last year's come-from-behind, 76-67 win in the Motor City (Dec. 11, 1999). BGSU has won the last three games at Anderson Arena, including an 82-73 decision two years ago, and the Falcons have an all-time home record of 4-3 vs. the Titans.

LAST TIME OUT: The Falcons split a pair of games to post a second-place finish in Auburn's Kroger Classic last weekend (Nov. 24-25) ... Friday, the Brown and Orange pulled out an 80-76 win over Charleston Southern ... redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a jumper in the lane to break a 73-73 tie with 1:05 left ... true frosh Emily Pohl hit all four of her free-throw attempts in the final 30 seconds ... junior Francine Miller had a game-high 23 points to lead five Falcons in double figures, and she added 11 rebounds for a double-double ... Brown also had a double-double, with 12 points and 12 boards ... senior Angie Farmer scored 17 points ... on Saturday, nationally-ranked Auburn scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back, en route to a 94-61 decision ... the Lady Tigers had a commanding 53-14 halftime lead ... BGSU outscored AU by a 47-41 margin in the second half, and had a 16-0 run late in the contest ... Miller and sophomore Megan Jerome each had 18 points, including 16 in the second half ... Jerome was 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-of-3 from three-point land, and made all seven of her free-throw attempts ... Miller was named to the all-tournament team.
JEROME HITS VS. AUBURN: Sophomore Megan Jerome had the best game of her Falcon career Saturday (Nov. 25) at Auburn ... Jerome scored 18 points to tie for team honors ... she had 16 points in the second half vs. the nationally-ranked Lady Tigers ... Jerome hit all four of her shots from the field, including a 3-for-3 performance from three-point land ... she went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line ... Jerome's previous career scoring high was nine points, set on two occasions last season ... she also had five rebounds in the game, just one off her career high in that department.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BGSU's win over Charleston Southern Friday (Nov. 24) ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament.
DOUBLE TROUBLE, PART TWO: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just her third game in the Brown and Orange, had the first double-double of her career in the win over Charleston Southern ... Brown's totals of 12 points and 12 rebounds were the best of her brief career in each category.
DOUBLE DIGITS: Through just four games this season, the Falcons have had eight different players hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion ... a total of eight different players hit double digits in that category last year.
BENCH STRENGTH: The Falcons won over Charleston Southern despite having just two starters hit the scoring column ... the Falcons got 40 points from the starters (23 from Francine Miller, 17 from Angie Farmer) and 40 points from the bench ... leading the charge off the bench was Pam Brown, with her 12 points and 12 boards ... junior Dana Western had 11 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Emily Pohl had her first double-digit scoring game, with 10 points ... BGSU's bench outscored CSU, 40-33, and held a 32-15 edge on the boards.
REBOUNDING A KEY: BGSU came back from a five-point halftime deficit vs. Charleston Southern, largely on the strength of the Falcons' rebounding effort ... BGSU held a 31-18 margin on the boards in the second half, en route to a 55-46 advantage for the game ... the Brown and Orange had 12 offensive rebounds in the second stanza, and 20 on the day.
60 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 60 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE "THREE": The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through four games this season, the Falcons are averaging 7.75 three-pointers made per contest.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are doing even better, sinking charity tosses at an .808 clip (80-of-99) ... additionally, the Falcons are making 20 free throws per game after averaging 12.1 last year.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1,890 attempts ... over the last two years, BGSU's totals are nearly 60 percent of the totals during those first 12 years ... Knoblauch's teams made 394 treys in 1,110 tries (see graphic on this page).
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance -- both school records -- in a win over Akron (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons hit double digits for the first time in 2000-01, making 11 treys in the win over Charleston Southern ... the Falcons had nine three-pointers in the Auburn game the next day.
FIRST TITLE GAME IN A WHILE...: The Falcons advanced to the championship game of the Kroger Classic last weekend ... that marked the first time that Bowling Green advanced to the championship contest of an in-season tournament since the 1992-93 season ... that year, the Falcons advanced to the championship game of the Boilermaker Classic before losing by three points to host Purdue ... BGSU has not won an in-season tourney since capturing the Illini Classic during the 1988-89 campaign ... it should be noted, however, that the Falcons have won the Mid-American Conference Tournament four times during that stretch.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot whenever the team takes the floor ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin has started each of the first four games ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, has seen her share of action, though ... Austin is averaging 23.5 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 16.3.
INJURY REPORT: Senior center Jackie Adlington went down in the first half of the season-opening win over Youngstown State ... Adlington, who started that contest, broke her foot and is expected to be sidelined for a total of at least four weeks.
KAPFERER SOLID AT EKU: Freshman Kelly Kapferer has displayed a knack for rebounding in the season's early going ... Kapferer is averaging 4.5 rebounds per game, good for third on the team ... she had nine rebounds in the win over Charleston Southern, the highest total of her brief career.
BGSU WINS HOME OPENER, AGAIN: The Falcons kept a rather impressive streak going in the Youngstown State game ... BGSU has now captured 12 of the last 13 home openers ... the only loss among the last 13 home-opening contests came to nationally-ranked Notre Dame, an eventual national semifinalist, in 1996.
A FEW MORE NOTES FROM THE YSU GAME: BGSU's total of 35 free throws made against Youngstown State fell just one shy of the school record ... the Brown and Orange made 36 against both Eastern Michigan (March 6, 1990) and Kent (Jan. 12, 1997) ... the Falcons shot .509 from the field against YSU ... BGSU made 50% or more of the team's shots from the floor only three times in 28 games last year, going 2-1 in those contests ... the Falcons won despite allowing over 80 points for the first time since a 98-93 overtime win over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 20, 1999 ... BGSU was 0-10 when allowing 80 or more points last winter.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Several current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is ranked second on the all-time BGSU list for career three-point percentage (.426, 120-of-282), while junior Francine Miller is third (.413, 81-of-196), while ... sophomore Kim Griech has moved up to fourth on that list (.392, 31-of-79) ... Farmer is in second place all-time with 120 three-pointers made, while Miller is now fourth with 81 ... Farmer has moved into second place with 282 career three-point attempts, while Miller is seventh with 196 triple tries.
