BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball head coach Dee Knoblauch has announced the signing of a pair of Detroit-area players to National Letters of Intent. Tene Lewis and Sakima Smith will join the Falcons for the 2001-02 academic year.
Both Lewis, a Southfield, Mich., native, and Smith, who hails from Detroit, Mich., are seniors at Detroit Communication & Media Arts High School. The two have helped the Pharoahs of head coach James Rogers to back-to-back Detroit Public School League title-game appearances, and have helped CMA to a berth in the Michigan Class C State Quarterfinals.
The team defeated Redford Bishop Borgess, 55-54, in the regional finals, and will meet Harbor Beach tonight (Nov. 28), with the winner earning a berth in the state semifinals.
Lewis, a 5-8 guard, is averaging approximately 10 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals this season to date. She was a third-team All-Area selection. Smith, a 6-0 forward, is averaging approximately 15 points, six boards, three blocked shots and three steals this season. She was named to the All-Area Second Team.
"We are extremely excited," said Knoblauch. "The addition of these two players raises our team speed and athleticism. They will be perfect in our pressing and fast-breaking style of play.
"Tene is slated to play the `two' guard, and Sakima will probably play power forward, but could also play small forward for us. Really, either of them could play a couple positions. Again, we are very excited to add Tene and Sakima to our program."
The Falcons have an overall record of 2-2 heading into Saturday's (Dec. 2) home contest vs. Detroit. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
