THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, looking to return to winning ways and possibly welcome back one of several injured players, plays its final game before breaking for the holidays. The Falcons (3-6) will take on Wright State University in a Saturday (Dec. 16) contest. Tipoff is scheduled for noon at WSU's Ervin J. Nutter Center (10,632).
Following the WSU game, the Falcons will be idle until heading to Milwaukee, Wis., for a Dec. 28 game against UW-Milwaukee. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m. locally (8:00 p.m. Eastern Time) at the Klotsche Center (5,000).
The Falcons' next home game is also the Mid-American Conference opener, as BGSU will face Akron in the first game of the new millennium (Jan. 3, 2001) at venerable Anderson Arena (5,000).
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 27-37. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 209-156 (.573). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
LUCKY 700: The Wright State game marks the 700th varsity contest in the history of the Falcon women's basketball program. BGSU currently has an all-time record of 426-273, good for a winning percentage of .609.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 3-6 record on the season, and the Falcons dropped a 95-49 decision to undefeated Ohio State at Anderson Arena Tuesday (Dec. 12). For the fourth game in a row, the Falcons played without three starters, all of whom missed the game due to injury.
Prior to that contest, BG snapped a four-game losing streak with an 83-73 win over Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9). That victory gave the Brown and Orange a 1-1 record and a second-place finish at the Arizona Basketball Classic in Tucson.
The Falcons opened the 2000-01 campaign with a 95-88 win over Youngstown State on Nov. 18. Three days later (Nov. 21), however, the Brown and Orange fell at Eastern Kentucky by an 89-61 final. BGSU then split a pair of games at Auburn's Kroger Classic (Nov. 24-25), topping Charleston Southern by an 80-76 count, but losing to the nationally-ranked hosts, 94-61, in the championship game. The Falcons dropped a home contest to Detroit, 94-75 (Dec. 2), and fell at St. Bonaventure, 87-85, on a layup at the buzzer (Dec. 5).
Last weekend, BGSU headed to Arizona and fell to the host Wildcats by a 99-43 count before rallying for the win over Fresno State.
Junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.8 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, was injured in the UDM game and missed the next four games. She was scheduled to begin practicing Thursday (Dec. 14) and may see action at Wright State.
Senior Angie Farmer is the only other Falcon averaging in double digits, with 10.2 points per outing. Farmer, however, also missed the last four games due to injury, and will sit out the Wright State contest as well.
Junior Dana Western is third on the team with 9.8 points per game. Western was the Falcons' leading scorer in last week's three games before being held to four points in the Ohio State game Tuesday.
The Falcons are 1-2 at Anderson Arena, 0-4 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site contests this year.
Sophomore Kim Griech is averaging 8.6 points, while three players - redshirt freshman Pam Brown, true freshman Lindsay Austin and senior Afra Smith - all are averaging 7.4 points per outing.
From long distance, a trio of Falcons have posted impressive shooting percentages. Farmer is shooting .500 from behind the arc, having gone 10-of-20 from long range. Western has made 14 three-pointers in 30 attempts this year, for a .467 percentage. Griech leads the team with 16 successful treys, and she is shooting .457 (16-of-35). Overall, Brown is shooting a team-best .466 from the field, having made 27 shots in 58 attempts. Farmer and Austin are shooting .441 and .440, respectively, on the year.
Brown currently leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg), followed by Miller (5.8 rpg), Western (also 5.8 rpg) and freshman Kelly Kapferer (3.3 rpg). BG is shooting .400 from three-point range and averaging 7.1 triples per game, while the foes have shot .325 from behind the arc to date.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.

Western set some sort of career standard in each of the three contests ... she had a career-best 16 points at St. Bonaventure Tuesday (Dec. 5), then topped that mark with 17 points vs. Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9) ... in between, Western had her first career double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds (tying her career best) at Arizona ... she was named to the all-tournament team at the Arizona Basketball Classic.

Adlington, who started that contest, broke her foot and is expected to be sidelined for the entire non-conference portion of the schedule.
YOUNGSTERS: The Falcon roster boasts 15 players, but just 11 have suited up last week ... those 11 included one senior, one junior, four sophomores and five freshmen.
AULT LEAVES TEAM: Freshman Andrea Ault has left the team for personal reasons ... Ault had not seen any game action for the Falcons, either during exhibition play or in the regular season.
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this year, a total of nine different players have made at least one start ... only two players, freshman Lindsay Austin and senior Afra Smith, have started all nine games this year.
65 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 65 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a three-pointer in the Detroit contest, the first of her career ... Brown became the 10th different Falcon to hit a trey this year, after just five games ... 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
DOUBLE DIGITS: Sophomore Karen Stocz had 11 points in the win over Fresno State, for the first double-digit scoring game of her collegiate career ... Stocz became the 10th different player this year to hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion ... a total of eight different players hit double digits in that category last year.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE "THREE": The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through nine games this season, the Falcons are averaging 7.11 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green had made at least five treys in every game this season, but sank just two against Ohio State.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are sinking charity tosses at a .739 clip (136-of-184) ... BGSU shot .769 or better from the free-throw line in each of the first five games this year, shooting .803 (106-of-132) during that time ... the Falcons slumped over the next three games, shooting just .523 (23-of-44), but rebounded to go 7-of-8 (.875) ... this year, the Falcons are making 15.1 free throws per game after averaging 12.1 last year.
DIFFERENT PLAYERS STEPPING UP: Through nine games this season, a total of eight different players have led or tied for the BGSU scoring lead at least once ... as mentioned earlier, 10 different players have had at least one double-digit scoring game this year ... junior Dana Western leads the way with six double-digit efforts, while freshman Lindsay Austin, redshirt frosh Pam Brown and junior Francine Miller each have three.
GOOD SHOOTING: The Falcons shot over .500 from the field twice in last week's three games, and have made over half their shots three times through nine contests ... BGSU shot over .500 only three times during all of last season ... BGSU is 2-1 in such games this year after posting the identical record last year.
GRIECH WAS GREAT: Sophomore Kim Griech made her first three starts of the year last week, and responded in a big way ... Griech led the Falcons in three-point field goals made last week, sinking nine in 18 attempts ... she also paced the Falcons with 4.0 assists per game, and was second in scoring, with 13.3 points per outing ... Griech had a career-high 17 points vs. Fresno State Saturday (Dec. 9), and also set career standards by sinking five treys and dishing out six assists in that game.
STOCZ STELLAR: Sophomore Karen Stocz had the best game of her Falcon career in the win over Fresno State (Dec. 9) ... Stocz scored a career-high 11 points, all in the second half ... several of her baskets stopped Fresno scoring runs, including back-to-back buckets after the Bulldogs had cut the lead to just three points ... her second basket in that stretch came with just one second remaining on the shot clock ... in addition to scoring, Stocz set career bests in rebounds and steals, with seven and three, respectively.
BROWN HITS FOR 22: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown has asserted herself as a force to be reckoned with in her first eight games ... Brown led the team in field-goal percentage last week, shooting .591 from the field (13-of-22) ... she had a season-best 22 points at St. Bonaventure ... Brown made 11 of her 14 shots from the floor, for a success rate of 78.6%, and added a team-high seven rebounds in the game ... despite playing just 19.7 minutes per game last week, Brown was second on the team in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and third in scoring (10.0 ppg) ... Brown has led or tied for team rebounding honors five times this year.
THE "THREE'S" KEEP COMING: The Falcons, despite playing without two players (Angie Farmer and Francine Miller) ranked second and third, respectively, in career three-point field-goal percentage, still were deadly from behind the arc last week ... BGSU averaged 7.33 treys per game last week and shot .449 (22-of-49) from long range ... the main perpetrators were junior Dana Western (.591, 8-of-14) and sophomore Kim Griech (.500, 9-of-18) ... with their success from long range this season, both Western and Griech are also among the BGSU career top-10 in three-point accuracy.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BGSU's win over Charleston Southern (Nov. 24) ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament.
DOUBLE TROUBLE, PART TWO (AND THREE): Redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just her third game in the Brown and Orange, had the first double-double of her career in the win over Charleston Southern ... BLOCK PARTY: After blocking a total of 39 shots (1.39 per game) last year, the Falcons already have blocked 26 shots this year ... BGSU is averaging 2.89 blocks per game.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot whenever the team takes the floor ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin has started each of the first nine games ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, has seen her share of action, though ... Austin is averaging 26.7 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 15.7.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Several current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is ranked second on the all-time BGSU list for career three-point percentage (.428, 121-of-283), while junior Francine Miller is third (.411, 81-of-197) ... sophomore Kim Griech has moved up to fourth on that list (.396, 42-of-106), while junior Dana Western has moved into eighth place (.365, 38-of-104) ... Farmer is in second place all-time with 121 three-pointers made, while Miller is fourth with 81 ... Farmer is second with 283 career three-point attempts, while Miller is seventh with 197 triple tries.
