BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The University of Detroit Mercy, leading by nine points at the half, used an early second-half run to pull away from the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2). The non-conference game was held at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
After BGSU's Afra Smith split a pair of free throws to open the second half, the visiting Titans went on a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 56-39. The Falcons never got closer than 14 points thereafter.
The host Falcons, now 2-3 on the season, struggled from the field in the second half. While BG did get to the free-throw line on numerous occasions, the Brown and Orange went just 1-for-14 from the field in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
For the game, the Falcons made 20 field goals in 62 attempts (32.3%). By contrast, UDM shot 59.4% in the first half and 45.8% for the game.
Compounding matters for the Falcons was the loss of All-MAC performer Francine Miller. Miller went down with an injury with six minutes gone in the game and did not return. The severity of the injury, to her right meniscus, will be known later, but it is possible that Miller will miss several weeks.
One of BGSU's other upperclass players, senior Angie Farmer, was hobbled by tendonitis in her foot, but did play 16 minutes in Saturday's game.
The Falcons were led offensively by a pair of freshman. True frosh Lindsay Austin had 13 points, as did redshirt freshman Pam Brown. Brown added a team-high seven rebounds, while Austin paced the Falcons with four assists and also had a game-high five steals.
For the visitors (3-2), five players were in double digits. Michelle James had all 16 of her points in the first half, while Molly Peterman matched her point total with 16 for the game. Randee Henry and Shari Hill each had 14 markers, while Kaneisha Moss scored 10 off the bench.
Henry had a game-high eight rebounds as the Titans held a 55-36 advantage in that department. Hill had six assists and four steals.
BG junior Dana Western had 10 points off the bench, while sophomore Kim Griech scored eight points. Both Smith and sophomore Megan Jerome had seven points on the day.
The Falcons are next in action Tuesday (Dec. 5), playing at St. Bonaventure in a 7:00 p.m. start.
