ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Gellaine Clarke's layup as the buzzer sounded gave host St. Bonaventure University an 87-85 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Tuesday night (Dec. 5). The non-conference game was held at SBU's Reilly Center.
The Falcons, now 2-4 on the year, rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit with a 27-5 run to begin the second half. At that point, the Falcons led by 11 at 71-60, but the Bonnies would come back.
The hosts took a three-point lead, 85-82, but a three-pointer by junior Dana Western tied the score at 85-all with 1:19 left. The score was still tied in the final seconds, and Western's three-point attempt bounced off the rim. Sophomore Kim Griech grabbed the rebound, but her shot was blocked and grabbed by an SBU defender. Her pass found Clarke, streaking all alone toward the other end of the court. She laid the ball up and in as the final buzzer sounded.
The Falcons shot 60.6% in the first half and 55.4% for the contest. Four Falcon starters were in double digits, led by 22 points from redshirt freshman Pam Brown. Brown was 11-of-14 from the floor.
Western had 16 points to set a personal career high, while Griech tied her career high with 15. Freshman Lindsay Austin had 14 points in the game.
The Bonnies were led by Melissa Fazio with 22 points, while Clarke had 21. SBU improves to 2-5 on the year.
The Falcons played without the team's top two scorers. Junior Francine Miller and senior Angie Farmer sat out the game due to injuries.
BGSU will head west, playing in this weekend's Arizona Basketball Classic in Tucson, Ariz. The Falcons will face Arizona Friday (Dec. 8) and take on Fresno State the following day.
