THE GAMES: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, looking to return to winning ways while battling a rash of injuries, will travel to Arizona to complete a stretch of three games away from home in a five-day span. The Falcons (2-4), after playing in the state of New York Tuesday (Dec. 5), will play in the Arizona Basketball Classic this weekend. The Brown and Orange will face the host Wildcats in a Friday (Dec. 8) contest, with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. Eastern) at the McKale Center (14,545).
Following the UA game, the Falcons will face Fresno State in a neutral-site game Saturday (Dec. 9). That contest is set for a 4:00 p.m. start (6:00 p.m. ET). BGSU then returns home for a Tuesday (Dec. 12) game against Ohio State.
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 26-35. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 208-154 (.575). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
AU GAME ON THE INTERNET: The BGSU-Arizona game can be heard over the Internet on the Arizona website (www.arizcats.com). After accessing the site, click on the "Arizona Game Radio" link under "Features", then select the BGSU game.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a 2-4 record on the season, and the Falcons are looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Tuesday (Dec. 5), a layup at the buzzer gave host St. Bonaventure an 87-85 win over the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons opened the 2000-01 campaign with a 95-88 win over Youngstown State on Nov. 18. In that game, four of the Falcons' five starters hit double digits in the scoring department.
Three days later (Nov. 21), however, the Brown and Orange fell at Eastern Kentucky by an 89-61 final. BGSU then split a pair of games at Auburn's Kroger Classic (Nov. 24-25), topping Charleston Southern by an 80-76 count, but losing to the nationally-ranked hosts, 94-61, in the championship game. The Falcons then dropped a home contest to Detroit, 94-75, Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2).
Junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.8 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, was injured in the UDM game and did not make the trip to St. Bonaventure. She probably will miss the games in Arizona as well.
Senior Angie Farmer, the only other Falcon averaging in double digits, has 10.2 points per outing. Farmer, however, also missed the SBU game due to injury, and is likely to miss the AU and Fresno State contests.
Junior Dana Western is third on the squad, with 9.3 points per game. Redshirt freshman Pam Brown (8.8 ppg), true freshman Lindsay Austin (8.7 ppg), sophomore Kim Griech (8.2 ppg) and senior Afra Smith (6.7 ppg) all are close behind.
Austin is shooting .571 from the field this season, having made 16 shots in 28 attempts. Brown has a .524 field-goal percentage (22-of-42).
From long distance, both Farmer and Western have made 10 three-point shots in 20 attempts (.500). Sophomore Megan Jerome is 5-of-8 (.625) from three-point land this year.
Brown (6.2 rpg) currently leads the team in rebounding, followed by Miller (5.8 rpg), Western (4.3 rpg) and freshman Kelly Kapferer (3.8 rpg). Austin leads the team with 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game, while Miller has averaged 2.8 assists to date. Both Miller and Western have four blocked shots this year.
BGSU is shooting .416 from the floor, while the opponents have a field-goal percentage of .424. The Falcons are shooting .766 from the free-throw line, having made 111 charity tosses in 145 attempts through six games. The Falcons are shooting .403 from three-point range and averaging an even 8.0 triples per game, while the foes are shooting .288 from behind the arc.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING ARIZONA: Arizona took a 3-1 record into a Wednesday (Dec. 6) home game against UNLV ... the Wildcats are receiving votes in both national polls ... AU is the second team listed under "also receiving votes" in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll Monday (Dec. 4), and the team also received votes in the Associated Press poll ... AU has defeated BYU, UC Santa Barbara and Rice, losing only to then #5 Notre Dame ... junior forward Elizabeth Pickney leads the Wildcats in scoring, with 15.8 points per game, while freshman forward Veranda James has 15.0 points and a team-high 11.0 rebounds per contest ... senior guard Reshea Bristol also is in double digits, with 10.0 points, and leads the team with 5.5 assists per outing ... junior guard Tysell Bozeman (9.8 ppg) and sophomore F/G Krista Warren (8.8 ppg) round out the probable starting five ... a total of eight letterwinners, including a pair of starters, returned from last year's team that went 25-7 overall and 13-5 in the Pacific 10 ... head coach Joan Bonvicini entered the UNLV game with a 162-106 record in her 10th year at Arizona ... she is 487-177 in her 22nd season overall.
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE: Fresno State will check into the BGSU game with a 2-3 record ... the Bulldogs have split four home games, downing Eastern Washington and Sacramento State, but losing to New Mexico State and Northern Arizona ... Tuesday (Dec. 5), in the team's first game away from home, FSU lost at Loyola Marymount, 85-63 ... the Bulldogs' probable starting lineup includes five sophomores ... one of those five, guard Lindsay Logan, leads the team with 15.2 points and 6.0 assists per game ... two others, forward Omelogo Udeze and guard Tiffany Simon, average 11.8 and 11.3 points, respectively ... center Channan High is averaging 7.5 points and a team-best 9.0 rebounds per contest ... guard Laura Garcia (3.0 ppg) is the fifth probable starter ... a total of five letterwinners, including three starters, returned from last year's team that went 11-18 overall and 4-10 in the Western Athletic Conference ... Britt King is 22-40 in her third year at the helm of the Bulldogs ... she has an overall record of 96-115 in her ninth year as a collegiate head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons have never met either Arizona or Fresno State in women's basketball.
LAST TIME OUT: Gellaine Clarke's layup as the buzzer sounded gave host St. Bonaventure an 87-85 victory over the Falcons Tuesday (Dec. 5) ... the Falcons had rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit with a 27-5 run to begin the second half ... at that point, the Brown and Orange led by 11 at 71-60, but the Bonnies would come back ... the hosts took a three-point laed, 85-82, but a three-pointer by junior Dana Western tied the score with 1:19 left ... the score was still tied in the final seconds, and another Western three-point attempt bounced off the rim ... sophomore Kim Griech grabbed the rebound, but her shot was blocked and grabbed by an SBU defender ... her pass found Clarke, streaking all alone toward the other end of the court ... she laid the ball up and in as the buzzer sounded ... the Falcons shot 60.6% in the first half and 55.4% for the game ... four BG starters were in double digits, led by 22 points from redshirt freshman Pam Brown ... Brown was 11-of-14 from the floor ... Western had 16 points to set a personal career high, while Griech tied her career best with 15 ... freshman Lindsay Austin had 14 points in the game ... the Bonnies were led by Melissa Fazio's 22 points, while Clarke had 21 ... BGSU played without the team's top-two scorers, junior Francine Miller and senior Angie Farmer.
BROWN HITS FOR 22: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown has asserted herself in a big way in her first six games ... Brown has hit double digits in scoring in three of the last four games, including a season-best 22 points at St. Bonaventure ... she made 11 of her 14 shots from the floor, for a success rate of 78.6%, and added a team-high seven rebounds in the game.
SHORTHANDED: The Falcons played the St. Bonaventure game, and could play this weekend's contests, without the team's top-two scorers ... both junior Francine Miller and senior co-captain Angie Farmer missed the SBU game due to injuries ... Miller had played in all 60 games since coming to BGSU, while Farmer had seen action in 51 consecutive contests.
YOUNGSTERS: The Falcon roster boasts 15 players, but just 11 suited up at St. Bonaventure ... those 11 included one senior, one junior, four sophomores and five freshmen.
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this year, through six games, a total of nine different players have made at least one start ... only two players, freshman Lindsay Austin and senior Afra Smith, have started every game this season.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a three-pointer in the Detroit contest, the first of her career ... Brown became the 10th different Falcon to hit a trey this year, after just five games ... 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
62 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 62 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE "THREE": The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through six games this season, the Falcons are averaging an even 8.00 three-pointers made per contest.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are doing nearly as well, sinking charity tosses at a .766 clip (111-of-145) ... additionally, the Falcons are making 18.5 free throws per game after averaging 12.1 last year ... BGSU shot .769 or better from the free-throw line in each of the first five games this year, prior to shooting just .385 (5-of-13) at St. Bonaventure.
