BG snapped a six-game winless streak (0-4-2) on Saturday with a decisive 7-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha. The Falcons' seven goals were a season high, with three players scoring their first markers of the year.
Freshman Erik Eaton led off the scoring with an even-strength marker at 9:58 of the first period. Eaton's first collegiate goal deflected off a UNO defenseman's skate and past Omaha goalie Dan Ellis. Roger Leonard and Doug Schueller picked up assists.
Scott Hewson completed the first period with a power-play tally at 19:29. Junior defenseman Joe Statkus recorded his first collegiate point with an assist on Hewson's goal. D'Arcy McConvey also picked up his first assist of the night.
Bowling Green started the scoring in the second period with Greg Day scoring his first goal of the night and 10th of the season. The game winner, scored at 3:19, was Day's fourth power-play goal this year. Linemate Ryan Fultz and defenseman Brian Escobedo garnered assists.
Less than three minutes later, James Chalmers opened the scoring for the Mavericks. BG was down 3-5 with Austin de Luis and Kevin Bieksa both in the penalty box for obstruction-tripping calls when Chalmers put in his fourth of the year at 5:51. Assists were awarded to Scott Turner and David Brisson.
Ryan Murphy put in his sixth goal of the season at 11:34. Hewson and McConvey each picked up their second points of the night on the even-strength goal.
As second period scoring began, so it would end, with Greg Day. Fultz and Escobedo assisted on the five-on-five goal, Day's second of the game and 11th of the season.
Austin de Luis opened the third period with his first goal of the season, beating replacement goaltender Rodney McLeod. Leonard picked up his second assist of the night on de Luis' power-play marker at 8:34.
Omaha defenseman Mike Gabinet scored his second of the season late in the third period. The even-strength goal, scored at 17:14, was assisted by Jason White and James Chalmers. Chalmers' assist marked his second point of the night.
With less than a minute left in the game, freshman Kevin Bieksa closed out the scoring with his first collegiate goal. Senior defenseman Doug Schueller fed the puck up to Bieksa, who broke in across the blue line and skated up into the slot. He rifled a shot into the upper corner of the net that beat McLeod stick side.
Falcon goalie Tyler Masters earned his third win of the season facing 28 Maverick shots and making 26 saves. Masters lowered his GAA to 2.89, while raising his save percentage to .910. Omaha goaltender Dan Ellis picked up the loss, dropping his overall record to 6-8-1.
Bowling Green is now 3-9-4 overall and 3-7-4 in the CCHA. The Falcons begin a six-game road trip December 28th at Mercyhurst. The Mavericks fall to 8-9-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the CCHA.
