SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Freshman goaltender Tyler Masters made 43 saves as the Bowling Green hockey team recorded a 3-2 win at Lake Superior Saturday night (March 11). The win gave the Falcons a 2-0 sweep of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association first-round playoff series.
The Falcons, the tournament's eighth seed, had recorded a 2-1 overtime win over the third-seeded Lakers Friday. BGSU is now 13-11-2 all-time in CCHA Tournament road games. That is the best playoff road winning percentage of any conference team.
On Saturday, the Falcons (now 17-18-2) got on the board first, as Ryan Murphy scored his ninth goal of the year at the 11:28 mark of the first period. The goal, assisted by Adam Edinger and Ryan Fultz, was the only scoring in the first 20 minutes.
LSSU's Trevor Weisgerber scored his first goal of the year just 2:30 into the second stanza, but Marc Barlow found the net, his fifth of the season, at the 12:49 mark. Edinger had the lone assist, his second of the night, on the give-and-go scoring play.
The Falcons, who were outshot by a 45-27 margin in the game, got a big goal when Scott Hewson scored with just 4:57 left in the third period. Craig Desjarlais and B.J. Adams drew assists on the play.
The Lakers (18-16-2) pulled within a goal after Mike Vigilante found the net at the 19:02 mark. LSSU put pressure on Masters in the final furious seconds, but could not score the equalizer.
The Falcons will advance to play a single game on the road Tuesday (March 14). BGSU will play a play-in contest at Nebraska Omaha, Ferris State or Notre Dame. The teams will be reseeded after the first round, with the new fifth seed (BGSU) playing at the fourth seed. Both the UNO-Northern Michigan series and the FSU-UND series are deadlocked at a game apiece after Saturday action. If UNO wins at Northern Michigan Sunday night, the Falcons will play at UNO on Tuesday. If NMU wins, the Brown and Orange will travel to play the FSU-Notre Dame winner.
Top-seeded Michigan and second-seeded Michigan State swept their first-round series, defeating Western Michigan and Miami. Both UM and MSU advance to the CCHA's semifinal round at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena next Friday (March 17).
