DeLAND, Fla. - The Bowling Green softball team saw a 10-game winning streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss at Stetson. The game, the second of a doubleheader, was played at the Sperling Sports Complex in DeLand, Fla., Saturday (March 11).
BGSU's 10-game win streak had tied the school record, set by the 1993 team.
The Falcons could manage just three hits in the game, by Carmen Hitterdal, Jenny Domschot and Kandice Machain.
BG's best offensive threat came in the third inning. Trailing, 1-0, after a first-inning SU run, the Falcons got a leadoff hit from Machain. Angie Domschot sacrificed Machain to second base, and reached base herself on a Hatter throwing error. Hitterdal's bunt single loaded the bases, but the next BG batter, Jenny Domschot, hit into a fielder's choice, with Machain out at the plate. Colleen Bates then lined out to the pitcher, and Erin Zwinck's fielder's choice resulted in Angie Domschot being out at the plate.
In the bottom of the third, SU's Tiffany Tolleson was injured attempting to steal. Her replacement, Heather McCrimmon, hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning off BG starter Andrea Genter.
Genter took the loss, allowing five hits and all three runs in four-plus innings of work. McKenna Houle surrendered two hits in two innings.
The Falcons are now 10-4, the best start in school history. BGSU's previous best 14-game start was a 9-5 mark in 1992. Stetson is now 17-10 after Saturday's DH.
BGSU's Florida trip has come to an end, and the Falcons are now idle until the University of Virginia Who's Hoo Classic on March 24-25. BG will face Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Penn State, in addition to the host school, in that tourney.
