BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
UP NEXT: The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team, after winning both of last week's matches, faces a pair of tough tests at home this week. The Falcons of coach Jay Harris, now 12-6 in dual-match play, will take a 2-0 Mid-American Conference record into a Thursday (April 13) match vs. Ball State. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Keefe Courts. The courts are located off Stadium Drive, directly behind the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Cardinals were the preseason choice to win the MAC, according to the coaches poll. Bowling Green was predicted to finish third in the league in that poll.
Following the BSU match, BGSU will host defending conference champion Western Michigan in a Saturday (April 15) match. First serve for that contest is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. The Broncos, coached by former Falcon mentor Dave Morin, were picked to finish second by the league's coaches.
HISCOX IS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: BGSU freshman Geoff Hiscox was named the MAC's Player of the Week, the league office announced last Wednesday (April 5). Hiscox earned the honor for the first time in his brief Falcon career after going 2-1 in singles action and a perfect 3-0 in doubles play the previous week. He won at the third singles flight against Rice, then made his debut at the top flight and posted a straight-sets win over Dayton. Hiscox won three matches at the second doubles flight, teaming with three different Falcons.
LAST WEEK: The Falcons captured matches against Xavier (7-0) and Northern Illinois (5-2) last weekend, moving to 12-6 in dual-match play this season.
In the XU match, BGSU's wins at every flight included victories from four freshmen, a sophomore and a senior. Frosh Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo won at the top flight, while classmates Geoff Hiscox, Micael Lopez-Acevedo and Peter Gardonyi won at flights three, four and six, respectively. Sophomore Vitek Wild lost just one game in two sets in his second-flight win, while senior co-captain Brandon Gabel won at #5 singles.
In doubles action, BG's winning teams - in order - included Gabel and Wild, Hiscox and sophomore Ed Kuresman, and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and soph Mike Kossoff.
On Sunday (April 9) at NIU, the Falcons used wins at the top four singles flights to secure the victory. BG's four straight-sets wins came from Wild at the top flight, Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and Hiscox at flights two and three, respectively, and Kossoff at flight #4. Kuresman and Gabel lost in three sets apiece at the bottom two flights, with Kuresman falling by a 7-5 score in his final set.
The Gabel/Wild team won at the top doubles level, while the Lopez-Acevedo twins were victorious at the third flight. BG's second-flight duo of Hiscox and Kuresman fell by an 8-6 count.
Wild has not lost a MAC regular-season match in his career. He went 7-0 last year, competing primarily at the second singles flight, and is 1-0 this year.
