Bowling Green sophomore Francine Miller was named "Player of the Year" as the Falcon women's basketball team was honored Friday (April 14) at their annual awards banquet. Led by Dr. Jodi Haney, Master of Ceremonies, the Falcons were recognized for their achievements in the 1999-2000 season. The team led the nation in two categories, free-throw percentage and three-point field goals made per game.
During the social hour, attendees were treated to a video of season highlights, compiled by graduate assistant coach Suzy Venet. The video, not surprisingly, included numerous segments of the women draining three pointers, and also featured a tribute to the team's two senior players, Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes. The other two seniors, Katie Bauer and Karla Clune were also recognized for their outstanding help as student managers. Each senior received a BGSU blanket and a plaque engraved with their name, number and years played, as well as a bouquet of roses.
BGSU Executive Vice President Dr. Linda Dobb spoke on behalf of the University President, Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau, and gave a dazzling speech. Dobb concluded by saying that she is proud to have these women on the BGSU campus, because they are not only extraordinary and talented athletes, but also are great students, people and role models.
Assistant coach Michelle Bohan presented the Most Improved Award to junior Afra Smith and the Hustle Award to freshman Kim Greich.
Dr. Lee Meserve, BGSU's Faculty Representative for Athletics, presented junior Angie Farmer with the Scholar-Athlete Award. Venet created a new award for the team this year, called the "Bench" award. The award recognized a player cheers, encourages, and leads both on and off the bench. This award went to both Afra Smith and Rachal Hamilton.
Head coach Dee Knoblauch presented seniors Sherry Kahle and Jaymee Wappes with the Defensive Players-of-the-year award, before Miller picked up the Long's Cleaners Player-of-the-Year award.
After the awards were given, the four seniors gave their speeches, and two of the rising seniors, Farmer and Smith, gave some insights into next season. Jackie Adlington also will be a senior in the 2000-2001 season. Dr. Haney brought the night to a close with some final remarks.
It was a great night for the Falcons, saying farewell and good luck to their beloved seniors and looking ahead to next year's prospects.
