BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Carmen Hitterdal provided solid play, both offensively and defensively, as the Bowling Green softball team recorded a 2-1 win over visiting Miami Tuesday (April 18) afternoon. The game, the first half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was played at the BGSU Softball Field.
Hitterdal, a senior centerfielder, was at the center of BG's two-run third inning. After junior 2B Angie Domschot singled with two outs, Hitterdal hit a triple up the alley in right-center. Several pitches later, Hitterdal came in to score on a wild pitch by RedHawk hurler Abbey Arnold. Those two runs were all the scoring that BGSU starter Jessie Milosek would need.
Milosek, after giving up a run in the second inning, blanked the RedHawks the rest of the way. MU's second-inning run came on singles by Laura Fulton, Erin Kucera and Erin Taylor.
In addition to Hitterdal's triple, she also had a double in the game, and preserved BG's lead with a stellar defensive play in the sixth. With one out in that inning, and MU runners at second and third, Milosek induced pinch-hitter Angie Gerber to hit a fly ball to left-center. Hitterdal ranged to her right, made the catch, and threw a strike to BG catcher Colleen Bates. Bates applied the tag on MU's Abbey Arnold to end the inning.
Abbey Arnold was the hard-luck loser for the visitors, falling to 5-11 on the season despite throwing a complete-game four-hitter. She struck out five and walked just two.
Milosek scattered eight hits to improve her record to 8-3. Her seasonal earned-run average now stands at 1.13 on the season.
Other than Hitterdal's two extra-base hits, Angie Domschot and Lynsey Ebel were the only Falcons to hit safely in the game.
Shortstop Libby Voshell made several key defensive plays in the game for the Brown and Orange. With MU runners on first and second in the fourth inning, the RedHawks' Nicki Pelfrey hit a grounder between short and third. Voshell fielded the ball deep in the hole and quickly flipped it to Ebel to force Kucera.
After a leadoff single in the Miami fifth, Voshell applied a quick tag after a high throw, to catch the runner attempting to steal.
The RedHawks doubled up the Falcons in the hit department, but left nine runners on base in the game.
