BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Freshman Libby Voshell's two-out, two-run single erased a 1-0 deficit, and the Bowling Green softball team went on to a 3-1 victory over visiting Kent Saturday afternoon (April 22). The game, the second of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, gave the Falcons a sweep of the three-game weekend series.
Sophomore Andrea Genter picked up the win for the Falcons, now 24-12 overall and 9-3 in the Mid-American Conference. Genter allowed seven hits and an unearned run in her five innings of work. She walked two batters and struck out three to improve to 4-5 on the year. Classmate Jessie Milosek worked the final two frames to earn her second save of the season. Milosek, who threw a no-hitter in Saturday's first game, gave up two hits in the nightcap. She struck out one batter and did not issue a walk.
Kent (13-23, 5-8) got on the board with an unearned run in the third inning. Lea Dorto drew a leadoff walk, and Kerry Kaser attempted to bunt her to second base. BG third baseman Erin Zwinck fielded the bunt, but her throw to second was high, and both runners were safe. The next batter, Grete Hornstrom, laid down a bunt, but Zwinck fielded it cleanly and threw to shortstop Libby Voshell to cut down Dorto at third. Eva Gallik, however, singled to load the bases before Jaci Stein hit a grounder to second. Falcon second baseman Angie Domschot's only play was at second base, and Kaser scored to break a scoreless tie. Genter worked out of the inning without further damage, however.
The Falcons took the lead for good in the fourth. With one out, Erin Zwinck was hit by a pitch from KSU starter Nicole Karasek. Just like in the Kent third inning, an error by the third baseman put runners on first and second, as KSU's Renee Lynch threw wildly after a bunt by junior Nikki Rouhana. Junior Lynsey Ebel lined out to shortstop, but Voshell came through with a two-out hit, the only BG hit of the inning.
The Brown and Orange tacked on another run in the fifth inning. Senior Colleen Bates drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a single by Renee Rosemeier. That score was the only earned run of the game for either team.
Karasek took the loss for Kent, despite throwing a complete-game five-hitter. She surrendered just one earned run, walking one and striking out three.
The sweep completed the home portion of the MAC schedule for the Falcons. BGSU's next eight games are MAC road contests.
The two BGSU wins, coupled with Marshall's Saturday split at Akron, moved the Falcons into a tie for first place in the East Division with MU. Both the Falcons and the Thundering Herd are 9-3 in league action.
BGSU returns to the diamond with a Tuesday (April 25) doubleheader at Miami, beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Falcons then head to Huntington for a three-game weekend series with Marshall.
