OXFORD, Ohio - Perhaps the Bowling Green softball team should pretend that every game against Miami is the second game of a doubleheader.
After dropping the opening game Tuesday (April 25), the Falcons exploded for a nine-run third inning en route to a 15-4 win over the host RedHawks. The Mid-American Conference doubleheader was held at MU's RedHawk Diamond.
The split, combined with Ohio's sweep of a twinbill with Marshall, moved the Falcons past the Thundering Herd into first place in the MAC's East Division. BGSU, now 25-13 overall, is 10-4 in MAC play, while Marshall is now 9-5. The two teams will meet in Huntington, W.Va., this weekend for a three-game series.
In the last three doubleheaders with the RedHawks, the Falcons have totalled 12 runs in the first game and 38 in the second.
After losing Tuesday's opener by a 4-3 score, the Falcons wasted no time in taking the lead in the second game. Junior Angie Domschot walked to lead off the game, and took second on a sac bunt by senior Carmen Hitterdal. A double by senior Colleen Bates brought Domschot home, and, one out later, three consecutive walks brought Bates around to score. MU starter Amber Arnold issued free passes to senior Erin Zwinck and juniors Nikki Rouhana and Lynsey Ebel. She was replaced by Tennille Bishop, who got the last out of the inning without further damage.
Bishop set the Falcons down in the second inning, allowing only a walk, but the roof caved in on the RedHawks in the third frame. BGSU scored a season-high nine runs in the inning, on seven hits --- all singles -- and four MU errors.
Renee Rosemeier, the first of 13 batters to come to the plate in the inning, grounded out, but Zwinck singled and Rouhana reached on an error, with Zwinck taking third. At that point, Abbey Arnold, who had hurled a complete-game win in game one, replaced Bishop in the circle for the home team. She was greeted by Ebel's run-scoring single. Libby Voshell hit into a fielder's choice, as MU shortstop Nicki Pelfrey made an errant throw to the plate in an attempt to cut down Rouhana at home. Then, Jen Domschot singled to plate Ebel, and her sister, Angie Domschot, reached on another MU error, loading the bases.
Hitterdal's RBI single allowed everyone to move up one base, and Bates plated both Domschot sisters with a single of her own. Rosemeier, who had made the first out of the inning, then made the second on a lineout to left, but her sacrifice fly brought home another run in the person of Hitterdal.
Zwinck then had her second hit of the inning, driving in a run, and Rouhana plated BG's ninth run of the inning with a single of her own.
Miami scored single runs off BGSU starter and winner Andrea Genter in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Both times, however, the Falcons countered with two-run frames, in the top half of both the fourth and the fifth.
In the BG fourth, Voshell led off with a single. She was replaced by pinch-runner Morgan LaNicca, who took second on a wild pitch and scored on Jen Domschot's single to right. Angie Domschot and Hitterdal followed with singles, with Hitterdal's hit scoring Jen Domschot.
Jen Domschot continued her successful day in the fifth inning. After Jess Jenkins ripped a one-out single, Domschot followed with a two-run homer to center. The round-tripper was her fourth of the year, tying her with Bates for the team lead.
The RedHawks put two more runs on the board off reliever Rebekah Tipton in the home half of the fifth, but Genter returned to slam the door and give the Brown and Orange a "run-rule" win.
All 15 healthy position players saw action in the game.
Jen Domschot led the BGSU hit brigade with three safeties, including the homer. She scored three runs and drove in four. BG's three seniors -- Hitterdal, Bates and Zwinck -- all had two hits as the Falcons had 15 as a team. Bates had three RBI in the game, while Zwinck, who was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, completed a DH which saw her go 4-for-5 and reach base in six of her seven plate appearances.
Jen Domschot, batting in the ninth spot in the order, had four hits in seven at-bats in the twinbill. She had a total of six RBI on the day.
Genter allowed only one earned run in her five innings of work to improve to 5-5 on the year. Amber Arnold, the first of three RedHawk pitchers, took the loss to drop to 8-10.
Miami dropped to 16-24 overall and 5-9 in MAC play.
The Falcons now prepare for the important series at Marshall this Friday and Saturday (April 28-29). The Falcons and the Herd will meet in a 3:00 p.m. single game Friday and a 1:00 p.m. twinbill Saturday.
