Women's Golf Prepares For MAC Championship

The Bowling Green State University women's golf team will be competing in the second annual Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship this weekend at Waldon Ponds in Hamilton, Ohio.
The Falcons finished sixth in last year's inaugural event held at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, with a team score of 1,039. Kent won the team title with a three round score of 932. The Golden Flashes were followed by Ohio (957), Toledo (964), Eastern Michigan (991), Northern Illinois (1014), BG and Western Michigan (1136).
In rankings released this week by the league office, freshman Shelley Binzel is 10th at 80.32 and second among all newcomers trailing only Kent's Veronique Drouin (80.04). Senior Shannon Sharp is 27th (84.37), sophomore Shannon Smith is 32nd (85.00), freshman Stephanie Elsea is 38th (85.95), senior Missy Hinds is 39th (86.35), sophomore Angel Garrett is 45th (89.00), with senior Kate Kolesnik 49th (91.27).
The three-day event begins on Friday. Eighteen holes will be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday with each school counting the top four scores (out of six golfers) each day.
Shannon Smith was BG's top finisher last year, tying 13th at 249. Kate Kolesnik tied for 26th at 263, Heidi Hansen was 29th at 265, Angel Garrett was 31st at 275 with Missy Hinds placing 35th at 280. Shannon Sharp shot back-to-back 90s for a two-round score of 180. She did not compete the third day.
