CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green's Vitek Wild has been named the Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced this morning (April 26). Wild, a sophomore, earns the league honor for the second time in his Falcon career.
Wild went 2-0 at both singles and doubles last week, as the Brown and Orange defeated both Eastern Michigan and Toledo on the road. In the process, the Falcons finished the regular season in a tie for first place in the MAC standings. The tie for the title is BG's first MAC crown of any kind since Bob Keefe's 1964 team went 15-0 en route to the league championship.
Wild, who hails from Prague, Czech Republic, lost just three games on the way to a win over EMU's Jake Stricker at the second singles flight Friday (April 21). The next day, he lost a total of only four games in a win over UT's Jorge Morales at the #1 flight.
Wild teamed with junior Brandon Gabel for a pair of doubles wins at the top flight.
The Falcons, 15-7 overall and 5-1 in MAC play, open the MAC Championships with a Thursday (April 27) match. The Brown and Orange, the second seed for the seven-team tournament, will face #7 Buffalo in a 9:00 a.m. match. The 2000 MAC Men's Tennis Championships are hosted by Toledo.
Should BGSU knock off the Bulls in the single-elimination tourney, the Falcons would face the winner of the match featuring #3 Ball State vs. #6 Eastern Michigan. That semifinal match would take place on Friday (April 28) at 1:00 p.m. The championship match is set for Saturday (April 29).
