HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Sophomore Andrea Genter threw a four-hit shutout, and freshman Libby Voshell homered as the Bowling Green softball team earned a 5-0 win at Marshall Saturday (April 29). The win gave BG a split of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field in Huntington, W. Va.
The victory gives the Falcons (27-14 overall, 12-5 MAC) a two-game lead in the MAC's East Division with three conference games remaining. Marshall, in second place in the division, falls to 22-25 and 10-7. Bowling Green's magic number to clinch a tie for the division title is one. Any combination of BG wins or MU losses equalling one will assure the Falcons of a tie for the division crown. Additionally, the Falcons now hold the head-to-head tiebreaker after winning two of the three games against the Thundering Herd.
In Saturday's second game, Genter and MU pitcher Sara Gulla each pitched four scoreless innings. BG could manage only one hit, a second-inning bunt single by senior Erin Zwinck, during that time. Genter held the Herd to two singles in those four frames.
The Falcons, who had a total of only seven hits in the first 21 innings of the series, broke through in the fifth, as Voshell belted a homer to left-center field with one out. The round-tripper was her third of the year.
BG doubled the lead in the sixth. Senior Carmen Hitterdal led off with an infield single, and took second on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Colleen Bates. Sophomore Renee Rosemeier, who had a three-run double in Saturday's first game, hit another two-bagger to score Hitterdal.
The Falcons broke the game open in the seventh. Voshell drew a one-out walk, and was replaced by pinch-runner Kandice Machain. MU reliever Michelle Boam got the second out, and then induced junior Angie Domschot to ground to short. But, MU's Carrie Dean bobbled it, and her throw to second was late, extending the inning. BGSU would capitalize on that mistake, as well as another Marshall miscue.
With the next batter, Hitterdal, at the plate, Boam threw wildly in an attempt to pick off Machain at second. Her throw went into the outfield, and MU centerfielder Nikki Wilcox had to dive to keep the ball from going all the way to the wall, as Machain scored and Angie Domschot moved to second.
Hitterdal then singled to put runners at the corners, and Bates doubled to left-center to score both runners. Genter completed the shutout, allowing only a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, to improve to 6-5 on the year. She struck out four and did not walk a batter en route to her second complete-game shutout of the season.
BG outhit Marshall, 7-4, with five of the Falcons' hits coming in the last two innings. Both Hitterdal and Zwinck had two-hit games, and Hitterdal scored two of BGSU's runs.
The Falcons end the MAC portion of the regular-season schedule with a three-game series at Ohio (14-25, 8-10). The teams will play a Friday (May 5) single game and a Saturday (May 6) twinbill in Athens, Ohio. Marshall will host Miami (16-27, 5-12) to end the MAC slate.
With the wins at Marshall, the Falcons clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament, which will be held at the site of the #1 seed May 11-13.
