DeKALB, Ill. - Central Michigan's Tina Kinney threw a complete-game two-hitter as the third-seeded Chippewas recorded a 3-0 victory over the Bowling Green softball team Thursday (May 11). The loss came in the Falcons' first game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament in DeKalb, Ill.
The Chippewas (29-11 overall), seeded third in the tourney, got on board with an unearned run in the first inning. With one out, Kim Burke reached on an error by Falcon pitcher McKenna Houle. Burke was forced on an infield grounder by Nicky Weston for the second out, but Weston advanced to second when the umpire called an illegal pitch. Then, Kinney helped her own cause with a single, sending Weston to third, and Houle was called for her second illegal pitch of the inning, allowing Weston to score.
The Chippewas scored two more runs in the fourth when Burke's two-out double off reliever Andrea Genter brought home Sharon Blower from second base and Becky Manson from first.
Meanwhile, the second-seeded Falcons (now 30-17) were unable to get a hit off Kinney. Junior Nikki Rouhana, named to the All-MAC First Team on Thursday, broke up the no-hit bid with a bloop single beyond the dive of shortstop Manson with two outs in the sixth. The only other Falcon hit was a sharp single up the middle from senior Erin Zwinck, another all-league first-teamer, to lead off the seventh.
Houle suffered the loss to drop to 10-8. She gave up four hits and one (unearned) run in three innings. Genter surrendered two runs and five hits in four innings. Each BGSU hurler issued one walk, and Genter struck out four Chippewas.
With the loss, the Falcons are in the elimination bracket and will play Marshall on Friday (May 12) in a game scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. Central Daylight Time (11:00 a.m. EDT).
Thursday's tournament action was pushed back approximately three hours due to thunderstorms that moved through the DeKalb area in the morning.
