Bowling Green State University men's basketball coach Dan Dakich has announced the signing of Jabari Mattox from Bloomingdale, Illinois (Westchester St. Joseph's) to a national letter of intent.
Mattox, a 6-1 point guard, led the Chargers to a 32-1 mark and the 1999 Illinois Class AA state championship. This past season, St. Joseph's compiled a 22-8 record with Mattox being the lone returning starter from the championship team.
He led the squad in scoring this past season averaging 14 points per game, while contributing five rebounds and five assists per contest.
"Jabari was a starter on an Illinois state championship team, and comes from a program that has a great tradition. He's a leader, a scorer, and a winner," said Dakich. "He's played in a system similar to ours. He's going to get an opportunity to play."
BG claimed the Mid-American Conference East Division title this past season with a 14-4 league mark and participated in the NIT. The Falcons finished the season with an overall record of 22-8.
The Falcons lose two players to graduation in Anthony Stacey and Dave Esterkamp. Stacey completed his tenure at BGSU as the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,938 and was selected as the MAC Player of the Year this past season. Esterkamp, an all-league honorable mention choice this year, is ranked 25th in BGSU history with 1,080 career points, while ranking fifth all-time with 99 three-point field goals.
