Bowling Green State University baseball head coach Danny Schmitz has announced the signing of David Viane (Farmington Hills, MI/Henry Ford Community College), a 6-0, 205-pound catcher to a national letter of intent.
Viane, a 1998 graduate of Farmington High School, batted .365 this past season at HFCC with six home runs and 38 RBI. He played two years of high school baseball at both Catholic Central and Farmington. Former Falcon hurler Jon Salter was his coach at Catholic Central.
He also earned two letters in football and one in basketball at FHS, while being a two-time selection to the school's honor roll. The right-hand batting Viane is playing this summer in the Great Lakes Collegiate League with the Motor City Marauders and coach Cris Newell.
The Falcons finished the 2000 campaign with an overall mark of 29-24-1 and lost two catchers to graduation. Matt Marcum batted .228 in 25 starts, while Brad Simon hit .262 in 23 starts. BG's 2001 catching corps will consist of junior Tim Newell, sophomore Justin Haire, freshman Zach King and Viane.
