KENT, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team used first-half goals from junior Leslie Hepfinger (Mason, Ohio) and sophomore Susan Wallace (Litchfield, Ohio) to defeat St. Bonaventure in the 2000 season opener for both teams. The match was part of the Kent Classic in Kent, Ohio.
The victory was the first for new Falcon head coach Andy Richards. Richards assumed the Falcon helm after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University.
The Falcons have started the season with a win in all four years of the program's history. BGSU won the first match in school history at Kent back in 1997, a 1-0 overtime win over the KSU Golden Flashes. BGSU won on the road at Valparaiso, 2-1, in 1998, before downing Michigan State, 3-2 in overtime, in the 1999 season-opening contest.
BGSU Sophomore goalkeeper Erika Flanders (Mason, Ohio) recorded her third career shutout, as she was called upon to make just three saves. The Falcons outshot the Bonnies by an 18-5 margin, and had a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Hepfinger scored her first career goal at the 13:29 mark. She intercepted the ball and sent a rocket past SBU 'keeper Karen Cunningham from 22 yards out. Then, at the 37:46 mark, Wallace stole a Bonnie pass in the backfield and scored from 10 yards away.
The goal by Wallace was the 100th score in the history of the Falcon program.
The Falcons, now 1-0 on the season, will face Bucknell on Sunday (Aug. 27). BU suffered a 3-2 loss to host Kent State in Friday's second match.
