The Mid-American Conference released its preseason coaches poll with Bowling Green ranked fourth behind Akron, Kentucky and Northern Illinois.
The Zips garnered six first-place votes and 48 points, while the Wildcats had the other first-place vote and 40 points. The Huskies, who upset BG in the 1999 MAC Quarterfinals in DeKalb, had 33 points with the Falcons recording 28 points.
Following Bowling Green were Marshall (21 points), Buffalo (18 points) and Western Michigan (8 points).
BG returns 14 letterwinners from last year's squad which compiled an overall mark of 8-10-1. The Falcons finished third in the MAC with a 4-2-1 league ledger.
Seventh-year head coach Mel Mahler will have to replace All-American Chris Dor, goalkeeper Ty Fowler (who played every minute last season) along with starters Bobby Biggs, Jason Bryant and Kevin Jackson.
Bowling Green opens the season in the Diadora Classic being hosted by Creighton University (Omaha, NE). The Falcons begin league play Oct. 6 at Northern Illinois and conclude the conference portion of their schedule Oct. 29 vs. Akron.
