MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University women's cross country team began the 2000 season on a winning note, capturing the Jeff Drenth Invitational Friday afternoon (Sept. 1). The three-team race, hosted by Central Michigan University, was held at University Park.
The Falcons of head coach Cami Wells took the top honors with 28 points, followed by host CMU with 32. Ferris State was third with 82 points.
BGSU, picked to finish 10th in the Mid-American Conference in the preseason coaches poll, narrowly downed the Chippewas, who were tabbed for seventh in the MAC race. The Brown and Orange had four runners place among the top-six finishers in the race.
Senior Christine Thompson, who was BGSU's top finisher in the Falcons' final six races of the 1999 season, picked up right where she left off. Thompson took top individual honors in the Jeff Drenth Invite with a time of 19:08. CMU's Stefanie Burklow was second in the race with a time of 19:15.
Lisa Mariea, the only senior on the Falcon roster other than Thompson, was third overall in a time of 19:17. Sophomore Joy Echler and freshman Jordan Hartmann placed fifth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Lisa Schroeder rounded out the Falcon scorers, finishing 13th in the 33-woman race.
The Falcons return to action a week from Saturday (Sept. 9), hosting Ohio and Western Michigan for a three-team meet.
