LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team surrendered the first two goals of the match and could not recover in a 2-1 loss to host UNLV Monday night (Sept. 11). The match was played at Johann Field.
With the temperature at 100 degrees at match time, the host Rebels (4-2-0) got on the board first. Cosette Joffs deposited a cross from Kelly Oshay into the back of the net at the 15:21 mark to give UNLV a lead it would not relinquish.
Early in the second half, UNLV's Cristyn Enea doubled the lead, with Anita Pedford drawing the assist at 52:48.
The Falcons' lone goal came with just under 20 minutes remaining. Redshirt sophomore Tracy Gleixner scored her second goal of the year off a rebounded penalty kick. Ashley Enser had taken the PK, but was foiled by UNLV goalkeeper Heidi Hart. Gleixner gathered the rebound and put the ball past Hart.
Gleixner, who sat out last year, has scored her two goals in just 67 minutes of action this year. She entered the UNLV contest at the 68:11 mark and scored just over two minutes later.
Gleixner now has 14 career goals in just 21 matches as a Falcon.
The visiting Brown and Orange could not equalize in the final minutes of play, and fell to 2-3-0 on the year. BGSU held a 10-9 advantage in shots in the match, and Falcon sophomore goalkeeper Erika Flanders made four saves.
"We played very well," said BGSU first-year head coach Andy Richards. "I was extremely pleased with the way the team performed tonight.
"We battled and competed, and had a couple chances to even the score. Unfortunately, it didn't happen, but our effort gives me a lot of hope for the future.
"I truly believe that, if we continue to play with that intensity and passion, we will have a very successful season."
The Falcons are next in action on Friday (Sept. 15), opening Mid-American Conference play with a 4:00 p.m. match at Central Michigan.
