CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Caty Rommeck has been named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office has announced. Rommeck, a native of Sterling Heights, Mich., earns the honor for the second time in her Falcon career, and for the second consecutive week.
Rommeck, a middle hitter/blocker, earned the league honor after leading the Falcons to a 3-0 record and a tournament title for the second consecutive weekend. The Brown and Orange topped Evansville, IUPUI and Illinois at Chicago to win the BGSU Invitational at Anderson Arena (Sept. 15-16).
Rommeck, who was named the tournament's MVP, averaged 3.10 digs and a full two blocks per game in the three wins. Rommeck's 20 blocks included 10 of the solo variety, with five of those coming vs. Evansville.
On the offensive side, Rommeck hit .383 with 3.90 kills per game. Over the Falcons' last seven matches - all wins - the Oakland University transfer is hitting .397 with 4.23 kills, 2.08 blocks and 2.96 digs per game. On the year, she leads the team in hitting (.352), kills (4.12 kpg) and blocks (1.91 bpg), and she paces the entire MAC in the latter category.
Rommeck's selection marks the third time in as many weeks this season that the Falcons have had a league defensive P-O-W. Freshman Susie Norris (Bascom, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) earned the honor on Sept. 5 for her play in the season's first weekend, and Rommeck shared the award with Ohio's Kris Whitfield last week.
The Falcons (7-2) of head coach Denise Van De Walle will continue a seven-match homestand this weekend, facing defending league champion Ball State in a Friday (Sept. 22) match before meeting last year's MAC East Division winner, Akron, Saturday (Sept. 23). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena (5,000).
