The Bowling Green State University hockey team suffered a 3-2 setback at the University of Nebraska Omaha Friday night.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead 5:54 into the contest on a goal by Jason White. White's fourth of the year was assisted by Dave Noel-Bernier and Jason Cupp.
BG scored the equalizer with 2:04 remaining in the opening stanza when Scott Hewson's power-play shot hit a defenseman's skate and went over the shoulder of UNO netminder Dan Ellis. Hewson's fourth of the campaign was assisted by Ryan Murphy and D'Arcy McConvey.
UNO grabbed a 2-1 advantage at the 6:33 mark of the middle period when Billy Pugliese tallied his third of the season from David Brisson and Andrew Wong.
The Falcons rallied again to tie the game at two just 1:21 after Pugliese's goal. Mark Wires netted his fourth of the year with Roger Leonard and Marc Barlow garnering assists.
The Mavericks' game-winner came with just 33 seconds left in the middle stanza as Andrew Wong scored during a UNO power play. Wong's fifth of the year was assisted by Brisson and Greg Zanon.
BG sophomore goalie Tyler Masters made 30 saves including 14 in the second period. UNO's Dan Ellis was credited with 23 saves including 10 in the final period. His best save came with less than a minute remaining in regulation when he gloved a Greg Day shot after BG had pulled Masters for an extra skater.
The Falcons fall to 6-11-4 overall and 3-8-4 in the CCHA, while UNO improves to 12-10-1 overall and 7-7-1 in the league. BG is now 0-5 in games decided by one goal and 6-7-3 when allowing three goals or less.
Saturday's series finale at the Omaha Civic Auditorium can be heard on WFOB (1430 AM).
In other CCHA action on Friday, Ferris State defeated Miami 5-3, Ohio State beat Michigan 3-1, Notre Dame upended Western Michigan 4-1, Michigan State blanked Lake Superior 2-0 and Alaska Fairbanks and Northern Michigan skated to a 4-4 (OT) tie.
The conference standings show Michigan State in first place with 23 points. The Spartans are followed by Western Michigan (20), Michigan (19), Northern Michigan and Ohio State (17), Miami and Nebraska Omaha (15), Alaska Fairbanks (13), Lake Superior (12), Ferris State (11), Bowling Green (10) and Notre Dame (8).
