Oestreng Named MAC Gymnast of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio - Marny Oestreng (BGSU, Jr., Trogstad, Norway) was named MAC Gymnast of the Week after she won two all-around titles for the week and set a school record on the floor exercise with a score of 9.975 in the season-opener. Oestreng led the Falcons to a school-record score of 194.825 in their season-opening defeat over Kent State (192.925) and Illinois-Chicago (189.50) on Friday, Jan. 12. She tied her career-high of 9.925 on the vault and won the bars with a score of 9.875. Against Northern Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 14, Oestreng won the all-around with a season-best score of 39.125. She also finished first on the bars (9.900) and the beam (9.85) and placed second on the vault (9.650) and the floor (9.725).
Other Nominees
Bethany Couturier (CMU, Jr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) won the all-around at the Michigan State Invitational with a 39.075 and tied for first place on the beam (9.875). She tied for third place on the vault (9.725) and tied for sixth place on the bars (9.775) and floor (9.700).
Jenny Eckel (KSU, So., Milford, Ohio) led the Golden Flashes with an all-around score of 38.950 and second place all-around at Bowling Green on Friday, Jan. 12. She scored a team-high 9.850 for first place on the beam and a 9.750 on the floor exercise.
Anna Gardina (NIU, So., Gahanna, Ohio) compiled a career-high 38.625 all-around total in the Huskies' first competition of the year on Sunday, Jan. 14. She finished in second place on the floor (9.725) and the beam (9.725) and placed third on the bars with a career-high 9.775.
Annmarie Adkins (WMU, So., Grosse Ile, Mich.) won the all-around competition at the Old Burdick's Bronco Invitational, leading WMU to a first-place finish overall. Adkins scored a person-best 38.150 to win the event. She won the bars with a career-best 9.850 and place third on the floor exercise with score of 9.725.

Team Notes
Ball State's Amy Bodus tied for first place on the beam with a score of 9.775 in a Cardinal loss to Ohio State (193.500-192.900) on Friday, Jan. 12. Bodus tied for second place on the floor exercise (9.850), tied for third place on the vault and finished third all-around (138.475). Kim Cromer and Courtney Vojtasek turned in third-place finishes on the vault (9.750) and beam (9.675), respectively. The Cardinals scored their fourth all-time highest mark on the floor with a score of 48.850. BSU opens the MAC season at Eastern Michigan on Friday, Jan. 19.
Bowling Green opened the season with a 3-0 start in two meets over the weekend. The Falcons hosted Kent State (192.925) and Illinois-Chicago (189.500) on Friday, Jan. 12, posting a winning score (and school record) of 194.825. Junior Marny Oestreng set a school-record score of 9.975 to win the floor exercise. Oestreng also won the all-around competition with a score of 39.050. BGSU picked up its first conference win with a 193.500-189.975 victory at Northern Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 14. Oestreng led the Falcons once again with a school record score of 39.125 to win the all-around title. She also finished first on the bars (9.900) and the beam (9.85) and placed second on the vault (9.650) and the floor (9.725). Freshman Pia Svojall won the vault (9.750) and the floor exercise (9.750), while sophomore Ann Marie Kassouf tied for first place on the beam with a career-best mark of 9.850. Junior Mindy Untch also tied for first place on the beam with a 9.850.
Central Michigan placed second at the Michigan State Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 14. Iowa won the meet with a score of 193.600. CMU scored 193.550, followed by host Michigan State with 191.075. Tammy Verrinder tied for second place all-around with a career-high 39.000 behind Bethany Couturier's winning score of 39.075. Verrinder tied for fourth place on the bars with a score of 9.800. Michele Orloski took second place on the floor exercise with a score of 9.825. Laura Chow finished sixth on the beam with a 9.775 and Andrea Price tied for sixth place on the bars with a career-high 9.775.
Eastern Michigan's Sara Wasilenko won the floor competition (9.800) en-route to a second-place finish all-around (38.800) at the Old Burdick's Bronco Invitational. Natalie Hashimoto placed third all-around (37.975). She won the vault (9.725), just ahead of freshman sister Leah Hashimoto who tied for second place (9.775) in the event. The Eagles dropped their first MAC dual against Western Michigan at the meet with a fourth-place finish overall. WMU won the event (193.100), followed by Illinois-Chicago (191.025) in second place, Massachusetts (189.600) in third place and EMU (189.400) in fourth place.
Kent State finished second in a triangular at Bowling Green on Friday, Jan. 12. BGSU won the meet (194.825), ahead of KSU's 192.925 and Illinois-Chicago's 189.950. Jenny Eckel led the Golden Flashes with an all-around score of 38.950 and second place all-around. She scored a team-high 9.850 for first place on the beam and a 9.750 on the floor exercise. Kelly Lovejoy scored a career-high 9.850 on the floor to tie for fourth place in the event. In her first collegiate meet, Jessie James tied for second place on the floor with a score of 9.875. Katie Pokrana placed third on the vault with a career-best 9.825.
Northern Illinois topped its highest score from all of last season in a 193.500-189.975 loss to Bowling Green on Sunday, Jan. 14. The dual marked the return of veterans Reyna Gilbert and Asli Ozmeral. Gilbert, a 2000 NCAA regional qualifier, came back from a knee injury to take fifth place on the floor exercise (9.700), while Ozmeral shared third place on the bars (9.775) in her first competition after she was injured just four meets into the 2000 season. Ozmeral scored 38.250 all-around and 9.600 on the floor exercise.
