ATHENS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort to post a win on the road against Ohio University Saturday afternoon (Jan. 6). The Falcons won the Mid-American Conference contest, 82-72, at "The Convo."
Junior Francine Miller scored 19 points to lead the Brown and Orange, pacing five players in double digits. Classmate Dana Western had 13 points on the afternoon. Senior Afra Smith scored 11 points, while freshmen Lindsay Austin and Kelly Kapferer had 10 points apiece. For Kapferer, the total marked a season high.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in MAC action. Cathy Szall had 25 points for the hosts, who dropped to 3-10 and 0-2 in league play.
The Falcons never trailed after Western hit a shot to give BG a 44-43 lead with 17:05 remaining, but the visitors could not put the Bobcats away until the final moments of the game.
The Brown and Orange led by as many as 12 points after Kim Griech hit a three-point shot with 12:20 left. But, the Bobcats kept coming back, drawing as close as two points, 68-66, with 3:31 remaining. From there, however, the Falcons took charge.
Kapferer grabbed a rebound and hit a basket with 3:10 left, and Farmer drained a trey with 2:32 remaining. The hosts would get no closer than six points thereafter.
Farmer was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the last minute of the game, as the Falcons were 14-of-15 (.933) from the stripe on the afternoon. Farmer has now made all 16 of her charity tosses over the last two games, and is a stellar 27-for-28 (.964) on the year.
With her 10-point effort, Kapferer became the 11th different Falcon player to have at least one double-digit game this year. A total of eight players turned the trick last season.
Kapferer had a team-high seven rebounds in the game, as the Falcons held a 35-28 advantage in that department. After turning the ball over 18 times in the first half, BGSU committed just six turnovers in the second 20 minutes. The Falcons forced 18 Ohio miscues on the day.
The Falcons shot .643 (12-of-19) from the field in the first half and .547 for the game. BGSU hit 10 three-pointers in the contest, shooting .625 (10-of-16) from beyond the arc.
