Orono, Maine - D'Arcy McConvey scored with 3:23 left in regulation and Tyler Masters was dominant in goal as BGSU earned a 1-1 tie with #13 Clarkson at the Maine Ice Breakers Tournament. The Falcons earned the third place trophy by virtue of another goal by McConvey in a tie-breaking shootout.
Clarkson unleashed a 52-shot barrage at Bowling Green goaltender Tyler Masters, but after allowing the Knights to score on their first shot the Falcon netminder stood tall the remainder of the game blanking the Knights despite facing numerous excellent scoring chances by the Knights.
"We threw 52 shots at him and I think at least 40 of them were point-blank range," stated Mark Morris. "The kid stood on his head all game long. We played in their end just about the whole game and one missed coverage late in the game by a young guy was the difference between a great win and a tie. In the shootout both goaltenders were stellar. They just happened to sneak one through."
Just 38 seconds after the opening faceoff, Clarkson's Jay Latulippe converted a behind-the-net pass from Matt Poapst. But that was all the Knights would see on their side of the scoreboard. Clarkson threw 15 shots at Masters in the first, 19 in the second, eight in the third and 10 more in the five-minute overtime session, but could not get a second goal by the BGSU goaltender.
"Our energy level was better tonight," BGSU coach Buddy Powers said. "I've said all along that you need a good goalkeeper and he did it tonight. When he's on he's tough to beat," Powers said about Masters.
Masters finished with a personal-record 51 saves, four off of the school record held by Al Sarachman against Michigan State set on Dec. 8, 1974.
With 3:23 remaining in regulation play, the Falcons took advantage of a Clarkson miscue to tie the game, spoiling Mike Walsh's shutout bid. Walsh finished with 20 saves through 65 minutes of play. The Knights struggled on the power play going 0-of-9, including a stretch of 5:19 midway through the second period when they enjoyed a man-advantage. Bowling Green was 0-of-6 with the man-advantage.
After battling through the sudden-death overtime period, which officially ended the game in a 1-1 tie, the teams went to a shootout to determine third place. The Falcons and Knights each missed on their first six shots, before McConvey lifted the Falcons to the shootout win on BGSU's seventh attempt.
Bowling Green (0-1-1) returns to the road next weekend, opening up Central Collegiate Hockey Association action at Northern Michigan. The two teams play Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20, at 7:05 p.m.
