BG HOME FOR THREE MATCHES THIS WEEK
The Falcons have a three game home stint this week, starting with IPFW on Tuesday and Miami and Marshall on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Falcons are coming off a 2-1 record last week.
Last week, the Falcons opened with their second conference home match on Wednesday (Oct. 10) at 7:00 p.m. against Kent State, coming back from a two game deficit to defeat the Golden Flashes 3-2 (30-32, 23-30, 30-24, 30-21, 15-7). The Falcons had a road trip during BGSU's Fall Break weekend, meeting Toledo on October 12 (7:00 p.m.) and Eastern Michigan on October 13 (3:00 p.m.). Both matches went five games, with a successful Falcon rally against the Eagles (20-30, 30-26, 17-30, 30-19, 16-14), but falling short against the Rockets (33-35, 27-30, 31-29, 30-22, 6-15). BG is now 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the MAC.
The Falcons have three conference matches next week, starting on the road October 24 against Ball State (7:00 p.m.) before heading back home to Anderson to play Buffalo Friday (Oct. 26) at 7:00 p.m. and Ohio (Oct. 27) at 3:00 p.m.
HEAD COACH DENISE VAN DE WALLE
Denise Van De Walle, the dean of MAC mentors, is in her 19th season with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 348-223. Her 21 wins with BG last season enabled her to surpass Miami's Carolyn Condit as the winningest coach in MAC history. Her 161 MAC wins entering the Miami match ranks her third all-time.
Kris Pesorda, a former BG standout, is in her second season as assistant coach for the Falcons. The 2000 season student assistant for the Brown and Orange, Sean Huiet, is in his first season as assistant coach.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons won their ninth and tenth matches of the season, coming from behind and defeating MAC oppenents Kent State (3-2) and Eastern Michigan (3-2). BG was defeated by Toledo in a heart-breaking five games.
THE OPPONENTS
Last week, IPFW had two matches, losing to Eastern Michigan in three games and Toledo, who rallied to beat the Volleydons 3-2. The Mastodons move to 9-9 overall in their first year at the Division I level. Coach Kelley Hartley is in her seventh year at IPFW and welcomes back six letterwinners, including three starters.
Miami had two home matches last weekend. The RedHawks won the conference matchup of the weekend over Akron (3-0), before being defeated by Wright State (2-3). Miami moves to 8-7 overall and 5-3 in the MAC. Head coach Carolyn Condit is in her eighteenth year at Miami and welcomes back twelve letterwinners, including six starters.
Marshall had two conference matches this weekend, defeating Central Michigan (3-1) before losing to Northern Illinois (3-0) to move to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the MAC. Coach Steffi Legall is in her fifth year with the Thundering Herd and welcomes back ten letterwinners, including four starters.
THE SERIES
Bowling Green and IPFW are tied at one game apiece. The last time these two teams met was in 1983, Coach Van De Walle's first year with BG, when the Falcons lost in three games.
Miami leads the series, 32-16 over Bowling Green. Bowling Green won the meeting last year in four games.
BG leads the series over Marshall, 6-1. Bowling Green swept the Thundering Herd last year, winning both times the two teams met in three games.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
In the only home game of the week, BG defeated Kent State (Oct. 10) 3-2...The Falcons were led by Caty Rommeck's 21 kills, two service aces, eleven digs and seven total blocks... Setter Natalie Becker had 56 assists as well as four kills, 13 digs and one block solo...Shyann Robinson had a career high and season high 17 kills, as well as a service ace, eleven digs and a block assist..Kristin Gamby had sixteen kills and six block assists in the win...In the 3-2 loss against Toledo (Oct. 12)...Bowling Green was led by Caty Rommeck's 25 kills and four total blocks, as well as 12 digs in the loss...Natalie Becker led the team with 59 assists and two aces, as well as posting six digs...Kristin Gamby recorded 18 kills and only three errors to hit .429, as well as posting three total blocks and an assist on the night...In the last game of the week, BG defeated EMU (Oct. 13)3-2...Bowling Green was led by Caty Rommeck's 23 kills, 20 digs and eight total blocks... Setter Natalie Becker led the team with 56 assists, as well as posting seven kills to hit .462 and eight digs... Kristin Gamby recorded 19 kills and nine digs, as well as two block assists in the win.
LEADERS OF THE MAC
The Falcons have several players among the various category leaders in the Mid-American Conference statistics as of October 15, 2001...Senior Caty Rommeck is second in the league in hitting percentage with .323, first in the MAC in kills per game (4.70), second in blocks (1.50) and thirteenth in digs (2.73)...Senior Natalie Becker averages 11.62 assists, good for fifth in the MAC... Sophomore Laura Twyman is tenth in the MAC in blocks with a 1.02 average...Junior Kristin Gamby is ninth in the MAC with a 3.46 kills per game average...As a team, the Falcons are fourth in the league in blocks (2.54)...BGSU ranks tenth in digs (14.12) and sixth in hitting pct. (.216) and sixth in assists (13.07)...The Falcons are seventh in kills (14.61) and 12th in service aces (1.27) for the 2001 season.
ROMMECK MOVES UP
Following the EMU game, Caty Rommeck's performance moves her higher in the Bowling Green career records list. Her 859 total kills makes her 10th on the all-time list...her 91 block solos move her from tenth to eighth, while her 250 block assists moves her to eighth...Her 343 total blocks also places her eighth on the all-time list.
