ATHENS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team found the road to be unkind this weekend, ending a two-match road swing with a 3-0 loss at Ohio University Sunday (Oct. 21). The Mid-American Conference contest was held at the Ohio Soccer Field.
The loss, combined with other results around the MAC on Sunday, eliminated the Falcons (7-7-2 overall, 2-6-1 MAC) from contention for home-field advantage in the MAC Tournament. BGSU has three conference matches remaining, and the Falcons will need at least two victories to have a chance to qualify for the eight-team tourney.
On "Senior Day" at Ohio, Bobcat senior Nicki Pendleton opened the scoring at the 9:10 mark. Pendleton assisted on the second OU goal, scored by Natalie Grein with 1:52 left in the first half.
Christel Schiering completed the scoring at 69:02. With the win, Ohio improves to 8-6-0 overall and 7-2-0 in MAC action.
The loss was the fourth in a row, all in league play, for the Falcons.
"I'm very proud of the team's effort," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "They tried very hard, particularly in the first half, to do the right thing.
"We're just having an extremely harsh run of bad luck. Ohio's first goal was a deflected shot that went around Erika into the goal, and that summed up the luck we are having. That, and injuries to some key players, means we're really struggling right now. But, we have three opportunities to try to get back to winning ways."
Ohio outshot the Falcons by a 26-8 margin (13-4 in each half), and the Bobcats had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. OU 'keeper Vanessa Dennis made four saves in goal, while BGSU junior Erika Flanders made eight stops.
The Bobcats had a 6-1 advantage in the corner kicks department, and the hosts were whistled for 14 fouls to BGSU's 10.
Prior to this weekend's action (BGSU lost at Marshall, 3-1, Friday), the Falcons had been 7-2-2 in road matches and 8-4-2 in all contests away from home since Sept. 15, 2000.
In other Sunday action around the MAC, Eastern Michigan blanked Buffalo, 4-0, Central Michigan topped Kent State, 1-0 in overtime, Marshall beat Toledo by a 3-0 score, Miami posted a 4-0 shutout over Western Michigan, and Northern Illinois beat Ball State, 3-2 in double-OT.
The Falcons return home for the final match of the season at Cochrane Field this weekend. BGSU will host Kent State in Friday (Oct. 26) action, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Brown and Orange will end the regular season with road matches vs. Miami Sunday (Oct. 28, 2:00 p.m.) and Ball State (Nov. 1, 3:00 p.m.).
