BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's cross country team will head to Ypsilanti, Mich., for Saturday's (Oct. 27) Mid-American Conference Championships. The league meet, hosted by Eastern Michigan University, will be held at the Eagle Crest Golf Course, with the women's race beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the men's race set for a noon start.
BGSU finished ninth in the 13-team race last year, and Christine Thompson finished 17th among individuals in her final MAC meet. Joy Echler, a junior this year, placed 22nd overall in last year's league race. Echler has been the top Falcon finisher in each of this season's five races to date.
In addition to Echler, senior Sarah Lohrbach, juniors Cyndi Bostdorff, Christy Paine and Kristin Spicer, sophomore Amber Culp, and freshmen Elise Gould, Melissa Krueger and Nicole Suitor are scheduled to make the trip to Michigan.
BGSU has won a total of seven team titles, second only to Ohio University's eight. The Falcons captured four consecutive crowns from 1980-83, and also won titles in 1995, 1996 and 1998.
Individually, the Falcons have had five champions, second only to Western Michigan's seven, and BGSU has had five runners-up, tied for the most among MAC schools. The Falcons' last individual winner was Suzanne Isco in 1995, with teammate Tracey Losi (the 1994 champion) finishing second. BGSU has had three runner-up finishes in the last six years (Losi, Jessica LaFene in 1996 and Hanane Sabri in 1998).
