BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team posted a school-record, double-digit goal total, recording a 10-1 win over Youngstown State University Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 3). The Falcons scored five goals in each half en route to the non-conference victory at Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-3-2 on the season. The visiting Penguins dropped to 1-10-0.
A number of school records fell or were matched on the afternoon. The nine-goal margin of victory was the largest in the five-year history of the Falcon program, and BG tied the school record for goals in a half in each period Wednesday.
Individually, freshman Kristy Coppes tied the school record for goals in a match, becoming just the third player in school history to record a hat trick. Junior Jill Conover and Coppes each had seven points in the contest, tying that school record.
Conover, who had two goals and three assists on the day, also tied the BGSU record for assists in a match. Freshman Nikki Pucillo also had three assists to match the school mark.
In addition to the seven-point days from Conover and Coppes, BGSU head coach Andy Richards also got a six-point effort from freshman Katie Piening. Piening had two goals and two assists in the match.
Junior Tracy Gleixner, who played just over a third of the match, had a pair of goals, while sophomore Carrie Richards, playing in her first collegiate contest, had a pair of assists.
Senior Mandy Smith scored a goal in the win, while freshman Jenny Berlovan picked up her first collegiate point with an assist.
Coppes got the Brown and Orange on the board at the 15:22 mark, and -- after a Smith goal at 18:39 -- scored again with 21:40 elapsed. Then, approximately six-and-a-half minutes later, Piening and Conover found the net just 18 seconds apart. The latter goals missed the school record for fastest two goals by just one second.
Junior goalkeeper Erika Flanders made two saves while working a scoreless 45 minutes in the net. Freshman Ali Shingler played the second half for the Brown and Orange, marking her longest playing time of the season.
YSU got the first goal of the second half, as Hannah Lawther scored off a Kim Jugenheimer assist at 52:39. But, Conover struck for her second goal of the day just 1:03 later, one-timing a Pucillo corner kick into the net past YSU goalie Mia Railing. Railing made nine saves in the match.
Piening scored her second collegiate goal, and her second of the match, at 61:14. Just under nine minutes later, Gleixner headed home a Richards cross. Richards had played all of 16 seconds in her collegiate career before registering her assist, and her first-ever touch of the ball in game action came just before making the crossing pass to Gleixner.
The Richards-to-Gleixner duo struck again with 8:05 left in the match, and Coppes completed the scoring at 86:35, completing the hat trick with assists from Conover and Berlovan.
Gleixner's goals moved her past Michelle Lisy (1997-2000) on the school's career list. Gleixner is now all alone in first place with 20 career goals. Conover now has 16 goals to place third behind Gleixner and Lisy (18).
Conover entered the day in a tie with Lisy for the BGSU career point record, and became the first Falcon to amass 50 points in a career. She now has 55 points in her BG tenure, while Gleixner has moved into a second-place tie with Lisy. Both players have 48 points.
Conover's three assists vs. YSU moved her into a tie for the career lead in that department. Conover now has 23 assists to equal the record set by Janice Mentrup (1997-2000).
With Coppes and Piening combining for five of BG's 10 goals in the win, the Falcon freshman class now has 13 of the Falcons' 25 scores on the season.
In addition to Richards, freshman Kylene Newell also saw the first playing time of her collegiate career. Shingler's second-half stint in goal marked her first game action at Cochrane Field.
"I am delighted with our performance," said Andy Richards. "That was an awesome display. We got a lot of contributions from every single person.
"It was nice to see five different people get on the scoresheet. It was great to see Kristy Coppes get a hat trick, and Katie Piening get her first two goals of the year. Mandy Smith has doubled her goal tally from last year, Tracy Gleixner got her two and, of course, Jill Conover continued to contribute as well.
"It was a team performance today. You can't rack up 10 goals without everybody contributing, and that was especially pleasing.
"It was fantastic for Carrie Richards and Kylene Newell to get on, particularly for Carrie. Within her first touch of the game, she created an assist, and within 10 minutes of play, she got two assists. That's fantastic.
"The most important thing was at halftime, at five-nil up, we asked the kids to be relentless in their pursuit of excellence. If you talk to any soccer coach, they'll tell you that if you're up 5-0 at the half, it's very easy to take your foot off the gas. Hopefully, this will give us a boost of confidence and take us through the next few games."
The hosts enjoyed a 35-7 advantage in shots, including a 19-3 margin in shots on goal. The 19 SOG tied a school record.
The Falcons held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks, taking nine of those in the second half. BG had a 22-3 shot advantage in the second 45 minutes.
BGSU will continue a five-match homestand with a Friday (Oct. 5) contest vs. the University of Akron. That Mid-American Conference match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Cochrane.
