BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Post-game quotes
Kent State Coach Dean Pees:
"Bowling Green's defense did a super job. And we could not make our mind up to do what they were doing to us on defense. If we blitzed them they kept throwing down the field, and if we lay back then they just kept running the ball."
Q: Can you talk about the differences between Bowling Green this year and last year?
"Bowling Green has a great defense. They had a great defense last year. I believe they returned most of their starters and it shows. They also returned most of their offensive starters, they just run a different scheme.
"Bowling Green has a lot more confidence then last year. Last year they lost to Buffalo early, and I believe that's when coach Blackney resigned, and this year they beat Missouri."
BGSU Coach Urban Meyer:
"The one thing I will say about Kent State is that they are a good team. Their quarterback is athletic and their coaches did an outstanding job scheming against us. You can see Kent State growing throughout the year and last week they came out with confidence and thoroughly out-performed Akron. Other than those two turnovers, I was concerned. I spent all week with the guys on defense because I was really scared about having to play an athletic quarterback. I think that our defense came out and hit them early and anytime you get three turnovers you shorten the game for your defense, and it gives your offense a lot more opportunities."
"I was very disappointed in us in the red zone. I thought we did a great job with the time of possession. You look at the fact that we had the ball for 43 minutes opposed to their 16, and you look at a spread offense that took the ball and completely dominated possession time, and I think that is a tribute to our guys. I think that John Gibson and Godfrey Lewis did a great job. We had receivers open and we stalled and we stalled at bad times. Again, you are facing a quality team and it's homecoming at Bowling Green and we are 4-1. I am very proud of these guys for that."
"I learned a long time ago that there are four stages in building a program. The first stage is that you have to teach them to compete and I think that we have taught them how to compete and I think that whenever you have good leaders and good players you will be able to compete. The second stage is that you have to teach them how to win. This team learned surprisingly fast how to win down at Missouri. When you have good players and good senior players that will happen. The third stage is that you have to learn how to handle winning, and I am not sure that we know how to do this yet. The fourth stage is winning a championship. It's not like we are asking the players to climb twelve flights, just four. We need to compete, learn how to win, how to handle winning, and win a championship, so I think we are learning after the devastating loss to Marshall, and I was very proud of their efforts. They came out and dominated this game today."
