The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, having won two consecutive matches for the first time this season, will play at home three times this week. The Falcons (6-3-2, 2-2-1 Mid-American Conference) of head coach Andy Richards will conclude the non-conference portion of the regular-season slate with a Tuesday (Oct. 9) match against Wright State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
Following the WSU contest, the Brown and Orange will return to MAC action for the final seven matches of the regular season, beginning with Friday's (Oct. 12) match vs. Eastern Michigan University. Starting time for that match is 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane.
Then, BGSU will conclude a five-match homestand with a Sunday (Oct. 14) contest against Central Michigan University. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane, with the Falcon senior class being honored prior to the match.
The Falcons won home matches over Youngstown State (10-1, Oct. 3) and Akron (3-0, Oct. 5) last week, setting a school record for goals in a match in the YSU contest.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS: Andy Richards is in his second year as a head coach, and has a record of 16-13-3 heading into the WSU match. Richards, who came to BGSU after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.
HIGHEST-SCORING OUTPUT IN SCHOOL HISTORY: As mentioned, the Falcons set a school record for goals in a match in a 10-1 win over Youngstown State Wednesday (Oct. 3) ... the previous record was nine goals, amassed in a home victory vs. Robert Morris College three years ago (9-2, Sept. 6, 1998) ... the Falcons set or tied numerous other records, detailed later in this release, vs. the Penguins.
CONOVER BECOMES CAREER SCORING LEADER: Junior Jill Conover had two goals and three assists vs. Youngstown State, in the process becoming the BGSU career scoring leader ... Conover, who entered that match tied for the school mark, now has 55 career points ... the career scoring lists can be found later in this release.
THE OPPONENTS: Wright State will bring a 4-5-0 overall record into Tuesday's (Oct. 9) match at BGSU ... the Raiders are 0-2 in Horizon League play ... WSU posted a 1-0 win over IUPUI Friday (Oct. 5), and saw Sunday's (Oct. 7) scheduled match at Detroit postponed due to field conditions ... senior Sharon Roscoe leads the team in goals (seven), assists (six) and points (20) this year ... senior Randi Freeman has recorded all nine decisions in goal, and has a goals-against average of 1.81 ... WSU is looking to win a fourth consecutive Horizon League (MCC) championship, having gone 12-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play last year ... the Raiders have won the league tournament and advanced to the NCAA tourney in each of the last three seasons ... head coach Scott Rodgers has a record of 43-45-5 in his fifth year, all at WSU ... the school's athletic web site is www.wsuraiders.com.
Eastern Michigan enters the week with an overall record of 8-4-0, and the Eagles have a MAC mark of 3-3-0 ... EMU has won four of the last five matches, and the team captured both MAC road contests last weekend ... the Eagles posted two-goal victories at both Western Michigan (3-1, Oct. 5) and Northern Illinois (2-0, Oct. 7) ... individually, sophomore Jessica Hupe leads the team with seven goals and 14 points ... senior Amanda Kulikowski has four goals and 11 points, while junior Courtney Sindelar's 10 points include a team-high four assists ... in goal, freshman Nikki Allen has seen the bulk of the time ... she has a 6-2-0 record and a 1.25 GAA ... last year, EMU went 11-7-2 overall and 8-3-0 in the MAC ... Central Michigan checks into the week with an overall mark of 5-4-1, and the Chippewas are 4-1-0 in MAC action ... the team plays road matches vs. Western Michigan Wednesday (Oct. 10) and Toledo Friday (Oct. 12) before coming to BGSU Sunday ... CMU has won four consecutive matches, including a pair of 2-1, come-from-behind wins vs. Akron (Sept. 30) and Marshall (Oct. 7) in the team's last two outings ... senior Alison Campbell leads the team with five goals and 12 points ... Campbell, a transfer from Tennessee, scored both goals in the win over Marshall ... in goal, sophomore Kari Alexander is 4-3-0 with a GAA of 0.93, while senior Elizabeth Quiney is 1-1-1 with a 1.53 GAA ... last year, the Chippewas went 10-10-0 overall and 7-4-0 in MAC play ... head coach Mark Salisbury, 35-30-3 in his fourth year at CMU, is 93-75-11 in his 10th season overall ... the school's athletic web site is www.cmuchippewas.com.
THE SERIES: The Falcons and Wright State are deadlocked, 0-0, in the all-time series, but the teams actually have met before ... last Oct. 4, the squads played nearly 17 scoreless minutes of a scheduled match in Dayton, before the contest was called due to an electrical storm.
BGSU and Eastern Michigan are tied, 3-3-0, in the series, and the teams have met only once at Cochrane Field prior to Friday's meeting ... in that match, EMU posted a 4-2 win (Oct. 15, 1999) ... in the first four years (1997-2000) after the MAC instituted the sport of women's soccer, the Eagles posted a 19-3-3 home record against league schools (regular season and tournament) ... all three losses came at the hands of the Falcons ... BGSU won a pair of matches in Ypsilanti last year, a 1-0, double-overtime contest in the regular season (Sept. 24, 2000) and a 2-1 match in the MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round (Oct. 31, 2000) ... Tracy Gleixner scored the lone goal of the regular-season match, while Erika Flanders stopped an EMU penalty kick ... in the latter match, Gleixner had an assist, while Jill Conover had a goal and an assist ... the Brown and Orange also won a MAC Tournament match at EMU in 1998 (1-0, Nov. 3) ... EMU's two wins in Ypsilanti came in the first two series meetings (1-0, Sept. 28, 1997, 5-2, Sept. 20, 1998).
The Falcons lead Central Michigan by a 2-1-0 count, including a 3-1 win in Mount Pleasant last year (Sept. 15, 2000) ... Jill Conover had a goal and two assists in that match, while Tracy Gleixner also found the back of the net ... the other two meetings, a 4-3 BGSU win (Oct. 1, 1998) and a 2-1 CMU triumph (Oct. 17, 1999), both came at Cochrane Field ... Gleixner had a goal and an assist in the former meeting, while Michelle Hoyng had an assist ... Annmarie Aparo had an assist in the latter match, the first of her collegiate career.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK: The Falcons posted a pair of decisive home wins ... BGSU downed Youngstown State, 10-1, Wednesday (Oct. 3) before topping Akron by a 3-0 score two days later ... freshman Kristy Coppes and junior Jill Conover each had seven points in the YSU match, while freshman Katie Piening had a six-point match ... Piening had a goal and two assists vs. the Zips, while Coppes scored the other two goals ... junior Erika Flanders, who worked a scoreless 45 minutes in the YSU contest, played the full 90 minutes vs. UA to earn the shutout.
RECORDS APLENTY VS. YOUNGSTOWN: The Falcons set or tied a number of school records in the 10-1 win over Youngstown ... the goal total and the margin of victory were the largest in the five-year history of the Falcon program, and BGSU tied the school record for goals in a half in each period ... individually, freshman Kristy Coppes tied the school record for goals in a match, becoming just the third player in school history to record a hat trick ... junior Jill Conover and Coppes each had seven points in the contest, tying that BGSU record ... GLEIXNER GETS GOALS: Junior Tracy Gleixner played just over a third of the match vs. Youngstown, but still scored two goals ... Gleixner had second-half tallies 11:51 apart ... the multiple-goal contest was the third of Gleixner's career (most in school history), and the first since her freshman season of 1998 ... she has become the top career goal-scorer in BG annals, with 20 goals in the Brown and Orange.

COPPES CONVERTS CHANCES: Freshman Kristy Coppes has shown a knack for finding the back of the net ... earlier this season, she tied a school record with a goal in four consecutive matches ... in last week's two contests, she scored five goals, with the first two multiple-goal matches of her young career ... Coppes became just the third player in the history of the BGSU program to score three times in a match - and the first to do so at Cochrane Field - with a hat trick vs. YSU ... she also had an assist vs. the Penguins to tie the school mark with seven points ... Coppes scored the final two goals in the 3-0 win over Akron ... after 11 matches, Coppes has 10 goals and the one assist ... her goal total is the second-most in a season in school history, just two away from tying Tracy Gleixner's school record (12 in 1998) ... PIENING PROVIDES PUNCH: In addition to the 11-point week from Kristy Coppes, BGSU head coach Andy Richards got some solid scoring from another freshman in last week's two matches ... Katie Piening, who entered the week with one point on the year, had 10 points (three goals, four assists) in the two wins ... Piening had two goals and two assists in the win over Youngstown State, then figured in the scoring of all three goals against Akron ... in the latter match, Piening had the first goal and assisted on the other two ... she currently ranks third on the team in scoring, with 11 points.
MORE MOVEMENT ON BGSU SCORING LISTS: Several current Falcons continue to move up the school's career scoring lists ... junior Jill Conover, as mentioned earlier, has taken over the BGSU career scoring lead ... her seven points vs. Youngstown State (tying the single-match record) give her 55 points for her career ... junior Tracy Gleixner had two goals in that match to move past Michelle Lisy (1997-2000) and assume the top spot with 20 career goals ... NOTING THE FALCONS: Sophomore Carrie Richards, playing in her first collegiate contest, had a pair of assists vs. Youngstown State ... Richards, a walk-on, had played all of 16 seconds in her Falcon career before registering her first assist ... her first-ever touch of the ball in game action came just before making a crossing pass to junior Tracy Gleixner, who scored ...
