Geoff Hiscox Just Keeps Winning
October 09, 2001 | Men's Tennis
Oct. 9, 2001
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The first of two days of the qualifying singles and doubles tournaments opened Tuesday (Oct. 9) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championships, and Bowling Green State University's Geoff Hiscox continued his winning ways in the singles bracket. The tournament is being held at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
Hiscox, a junior, posted a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Tulsa's Pavel Sebastyanski to open the qualifying round.
Shortly after that win, Hiscox had to turn around and compete in the doubles portion of the tourney. He and senior Mike Kossoff suffered an 8-5 defeat to the University of Texas team of Haymond/Jenkin. That UT duo is the same team that defeated BG's Peter Gardonyi and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo in the second round of the pre-qualifier.
First-round qualifying matches took place Tuesday and the winners must win one more round Wednesday (Oct. 10) to advance to the Oct. 11-14 main draw.
Hiscox defeated Jacob Nordwall (Charlotte), Rodrigo Villarroel (Charleston Southern), Stephen Mitchell (Alabama) and Travis Hasson (San Diego State) in the prequalifying rounds. Monday, Hiscox was scheduled to face TCU's Daniel Wajnberg, but the match was pulled and both players were advanced to the qualifying tournament.
The ITA Men's All-American Championships are the first of three national collegiate tennis championships in the 2001-02 season. Among Tuesday's highlights in qualifying singles was Auburn's Andrew Colombo upsetting top seed Steven Capriati of Arizona 6-4, 6-4.
Prequalifying singles and doubles tournaments took place over the weekend. Over 300 players entered that tournament to try to qualify for the main draw.
The tournament can be followed at the ITA's official web site (www.itatennis.com).
