Cross Country Course Dedication on Saturday

Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University will honor former track and cross country coach Mel Brodt on Saturday, when the institution will name the cross country course in his honor. A dedication ceremony will take place at 2:15 p.m., directly east of the football practice fields. Brodt also will speak at the 2001 Track and Field Alumni and Awards Banquet which will be held at 11:15 a.m.
Brodt was one of the greatest distance running coaches in the country. His long and storied twenty-five year career included four straight top 10 NCAA Championship finishes, the 1969 Mid-American Conference Championship, and runner-up finishes seven other times. During Brodt's coaching tenure at BGSU he coached one Olympic Champion (Dave Wottle), one world record holder, three American event record holders, 28 All-Americans and 46 MAC Champions. Brodt was inducted into the Ohio Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1984, was the recipient of the Ed Baker Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to track and field in Ohio, and was selected to the Ohio Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1970. Mel Brodt and his wife, Jane, currently reside in Venice, Fla., enjoying their retirement.
