Bowling Green Hockey Falls 4-0.
November 02, 2001 | Ice Hockey
BGSU successfully killed off two Michigan State power plays in the first eight minutes of the game, thanks to aggressive defense by the Falcons and freshman goalie Jordan Sigalet. The British Columbia native got his first collegiate start for the Falcons in place of junior Tyler Masters.
However, MSU (4-2-1 overall, 4-2-1 in CCHA) struck first just seconds after their second power play ended when Kevin Estrada took a pass from Tim Hearon just above the crease and shot to the open end of the net past Sigalet at 9:18 of the first period. MSU outshot Bowling Green 20-12 in the opening 20 minutes with Sigalet recording 13 saves and MSU's Ryan Miller seven.
That was all the Spartans would get until 1:48 into the second period when Steve Jackson extended the MSU lead to 2-0 with a goal from just above the crease. In the second, Sigalet turned away 13 Spartan shots while MSU outshot the Falcons 19-14 in the period.
In the third period, MSU added to its advantage with a goal by Adam Hall who shot stick-side on Sigalet over his right shoulder for a 3-0 lead at 5:40. Then, MSU scored its first power play goal of the night when Estrada scored his second goal of the game at 11:24 for the final 4-0 decision.
"They won the battles around the net," BGSU coach Buddy Powers said about the MSU attack. "You've got to get the rebounds and loose pucks and they did that."
Michigan State outshot the Falcons just 32-30 with BGSU holding a 14-4 advantage in the third period. However, Miller posted the shutout in the net for MSU with 30 saves. Sigalet ended with 28 saves, respectively. BGSU was 0-for-4 on the power play while MSU was 1-for-5.
The Falcons (1-5-2 overall, 1-4-1 in CCHA) return home next weekend to face Miami (OH) at the BGSU Ice Arena (Nov. 9-10). Both faceoffs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
