Falcons Travel to Lake Superior
Bowling Green State University plays at Lake Superior State University this weekend in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Nov. 23-24. The Falcons are 10th this week in the CCHA standings while Lake Superior is just three points behind in 12th place.
BGSU versus Lake Superior
The Falcons lead the overall series against Lake Superior 62-50-4. BGSU has won five-straight against Lake Superior, including a season sweep last year at the BGSU Ice Arena by identical scores of 4-1 and 4-1. Bowling Green has won three straight at Taffy Abel Arena.

Falcons Face Tough Schedule
Four of the seven opponents that Bowling Green has faced so far this season are ranked among the top-15 in the country this week by the USA Today/American Hockey National Poll. Included in that list is #4 Michigan State, #10 Northern Michigan, #14 Ohio State and #15 Maine. Another team that BGSU has faced is Miami, which received votes this week. Combined, the four BGSU opponents in the top-15 are 26-11-5.
Falcons, Powers Near Milestones for Victories
With its 4-1 victory vs. Wayne State on Saturday, Bowling Green moves to within one win of capturing the school's 700th varsity victory in 32 years of hockey (699-494-68). Also, head coach Buddy Powers moves one game closer to winning his 250th collegiate victory (249-201-38) in 13 years of coaching.
Sigalet Earns First Victory
FR goalie Jordan Sigalet earned his first collegiate victory in the net for Bowling Green on Saturday at Wayne State, 4-1. In his third start for the Falcons, Sigalet had a career-high 29 saves and helped hold the Warriors to 0-for-6 in power play attempts. Also in the game, Sigalet stopped Chris Vail's penalty shot at 9:38 of the third period. It marked the first penalty shot attempted vs. Bowling Green in just over two years. The last opponent to attempt a penalty shot was Michigan State's Adam Hall (Nov. 13, 1999) who was stopped by Tyler Masters.
Weekend Broadcast Schedule
Friday night's game at Lake Superior will not be aired on WBVI-FM so that the Bowling Green-Toledo football game may be aired. Saturday night's broadcast will air as usual on WBGU-FM with pregame beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m.
Lynn Scores First Collegiate Point
FR defenseman Matt Lynn recorded his first collegiate point with an assist on Marc Barlow's game-winning goal against Wayne State on Saturday night. Lynn has played in four games this year and is the fifth of six freshman forwards/defensemen to score this season. Defenseman Taylor Christie in the lone freshman to not score a point yet.
Falcons Becoming Offensive
Bowling Green scored four goals and had 30-plus shot attempts in back-to-back games for the first time this season in last weekend's series vs. Wayne State. BGSU had scored more than four goals just twice this year entering the WSU series and not on consecutive nights, while the Falcons had 34 shot attempts on Friday and 31 on Saturday.
Falcons Score Short-Handed
JR forward Tyler Knight scored Bowling Green's first short-handed goal of the year on Saturday at Wayne State. Knight used assists from Kevin Bieksa and Brian Escobedo for the 4-on-5 score. BGSU had three short-handed goals last season.
Current Point Streaks
SR forward Greg Day and SR defenseman Marc Barlow are currently riding four-game point streaks for the Falcons. During Day's stretch the captain has scored 3-3--6 and assistant captain Barlow has tallied 2-4--6. Earlier this season, Day had a five-game point streak going with his personal best being seven games. The current four-game scoring and assist streak for Barlow ties his personal best set last spring. Also, fellow assistant captain Scott Hewson has a two-game goal streak, tying a personal best for the forward.
Moore Is Held to Lesser Than vs. Wayne State
SR defenseman Grady Moore was held scoreless in his first two-game series since the opening of the 2001-02 season at the Ice Breaker Cup. Moore missed his only two shot attempts this weekend against the Warriors and failed to assist on any of the eight Falcon goals.
Kevin Bieksa Assisting As of Late
SO defenseman Kevin Bieksa assisted on two goals in the Nov. 17 win at Wayne State, 4-1, tying a personal best. He also had one assist the night before in a 4-4 tie. In the last four games, Bieksa has registered all four of his points and assists for the season (0-4--4). Last year, the Ontario native had nine assists (4-9--13).
Minnabarriet Named CCHA Rookie of the Week (Nov. 12)
FR forward Ryan Minnabarriet was named the CCHA Rookie of the Week on Nov. 12 for his two goal, one assist effort against visiting #14 Miami. Minnabarriet, a native of Ashcroft, British Columbia, scored all three of his points on Nov. 9 in a 9-4 Falcon victory. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder currently leads the team with six goals this year (6-1--7). His five goals in CCHA play ties him for 5th among league leaders while he is fifth in shot percentage (.312, 5 of 16), as well.
Moore Is Better
SR defenseman Grady Moore broke a personal-best with four points and three assists on Nov. 9 against visiting #14 Miami. His one goal and three assists helped the Falcons defeat Miami 9-4. During a seven-game stretch that included his four-point outburst vs. Miami, Moore was 3-7--10, accounting for all of his points so far this season.
Bowling Green Offense Takes Off
The Falcons had a season-high 25 points, 16 assists and nine goals in a 9-4 victory against visiting Miami on Nov. 9. It marked the best offensive game for Bowling Green since a 10-3 victory at Alaska Fairbanks (Feb. 13, 1999). In the last four games, BG has netted 19 goals and had 32 assists, compared to just 17 goals and 30 assists in their first eight games
Austin de Luis "Assists" BGSU Split With Miami
SR forward Austin de Luis had a career-high three assists on Nov. 9 against visiting Miami in a 9-4 victory. The next night he added two more assists (0-5--5) and was +5 in the series. The five assists tied his season total from last year. He currently is tied for second on the team with six assists.
Sigalet Earns First Career Start
FR goalie Jordan Sigalet received his first collegiate start in the net on Nov. 2, at #4 Michigan State. Sigalet ended the game with 28 saves in 59:54 of action and allowed four goals, including one power play goal. The freshman also appeared in the Nov. 1 game against MSU, making 12 saves and allowing no goals in the final 12:05. For the weekend, Sigalet allowed four goals in just under 72 minutes of action (71:59) for a 3.33 gaa, and posted 40 saves (.909 pct.) against the Spartans.
Moore Power Plays, Please
SR defenseman Grady Moore has made a living off of the power play during his career in the Brown and Orange. Of his 19 goals over the last four years, 12 have come on the power play. And so far this season, five of his seven assists have come on the power play, as well.
Greg Days Scores 100th Point
SR captain Greg Day recorded his 100th career point at Bowling Green on Friday, Oct. 26, with an assist on Marc Barlow's goal in the first period of a 5-3 win against OSU. His 100th point (44 goals, 56 assists) came in his 120th consecutive game played for the Falcons. He currently has a team-high 11 points (5-6--11) and 108 for his career (48-60--108). Day is the 76th player all-time to reach the 100-point club at BGSU.
Spreading the Wealth
Fifteen different Falcons have scored goals so far this season, including six of the seven seniors and four of six freshmen. Ryan Minnabarriet (six) and Greg Day (five) are the top two goal scorers for the Falcons.
Masters Sets New Career Mark
JR goalie Tyler Masters recorded a career-high 51 saves on Oct. 13 against #13 Clarkson at the Ice Breaker Cup, in addition to seven shootout saves. The game finished in a 1-1 tie after Masters knocked away 51 of 52 shots attempted by the Knights. His 51 saves were four shy of BGSU's school record of 55 set by Al Sarachman on Dec. 8, 1974 against Michigan State. In two games at the Ice Breaker, Masters finished with 76 saves.
Injury Report
SR defenseman Joe Statkus is probable (back) this weekend. Everyone else should be available for the Falcons.
2001-2002 Captains
This year's team captain is senior forward Greg Day. The assistant captains are seniors Marc Barlow and Scott Hewson. Combined, the three players have played in 351 games, and scored 78 goals and over 200 points in the last three years. Day has not missed a single game since he arrived in Bowling Green, appearing in 127-straight games.
Assistant Coaches
Head Coach Buddy Powers is assisted this season by Dave Smith (Ohio State '92) and Tim Alexander (Bowling Green '80). Smith is in his second season at Bowling Green while this is Alexander's first year on the bench for his alma mater. Dan St. Jean serves as volunteer coach and is in his fourth season with the Falcons.
Bieksa and Sigalet Drafted
This past summer, SO defenseman Kevin Bieksa and FR goalie Jordan Sigalet were selected in the 2001 National Hockey League draft. Bieksa was drafted in the 5th round by the Vancouver Canucks as their 4th pick in the draft. Sigalet was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 7th round as their sixth overall pick.
Radio Play-By-Play
The flagship stations of Bowling Green State University hockey are WBVI-FM (96.7) in Findlay, and WBGU-FM (88.1) in Bowling Green. All Friday contests will be carried on WBVI and can be heard on-line at either www.bgsufalcons.com or www.wbvi.com . All Saturday games will be aired on WBGU. Steve Mears is in his third season as the play-by-play voice for the Falcons while Dave Crane is in his third year of color commentary.
Wayne State Series (Nov. 16-17)
The Falcons tied Wayne State at home on Nov. 16, 4-4, but rebounded with a 4-1 victory the following night at WSU. In the first game, SO Roger Leonard and FR Denis White scored their first goals of the season in the first period for an early 2-1 BGSU lead. Then, FR Ryan Minnabarriet and SR Scott Hewson netted goals to put the Falcons ahead 4-3 before WSU's game-tying goal at 18:15 in the third period. Bowling Green led from start to finish the next night with goals by Hewson, Marc Barlow, Tyler Knight and Colen Pappas. FR Jordan Sigalet earned his first collegiate victory in the net, recording a career-high 29 saves.
Miami (OH) Series (Nov. 9-10)
Bowling Green split its CCHA series against visiting #14 Miami with a 9-4 victory on Friday and a 5-2 setback the following night. The nine goals scored marked the most by a Falcon squad since a 10-3 victory at Alaska Fairbanks on Feb. 13, 1999. Grady Moore (1-3--4), Austin de Luis (0-3--3) Ryan Wetterberg (2-0--2) and Ryan Minnabarriet (2-1--3) each had career games while FR Steve Brudzewski scored his first collegiate goal.
Michigan State Series (Nov. 1-2)
No. 4-ranked Michigan State swept Bowling Green last weekend at Munn Ice Arena, 6-3 and 4-0. The 4-0 loss was the first shutout of the Falcons since Feb. 17 of last season against Ferris State (3-0 loss). In the 6-3 defeat, SR defenseman Grady Moore scored a career-high three points (1-2--3) by having a hand in each of the three goals scored. FR Jordan Sigalet earned his first collegiate start in the net on Nov. 2, finishing with 28 saves and allowing four goals.
Ohio State Series (Oct. 26-27)
Bowling Green picked up its first victory of the season against Ohio State in the home opener for the Falcons, 5-3. Five different players scored for BGSU in the victory while goalie Tyler Masters had 31 saves in the net. The Buckeyes tripped up BGSU the next night with a goal at 19:33 to break a 3-3 tie. SO Brian Escobedo had just tied the game 21 seconds earlier for Bowling Green. In the two games, four different Falcons scored their first goals of the season including Marc Barlow, Scott Hewson, Ryan Wetterberg and Austin de Luis.
Northern Michigan Series (Oct. 19-20)
Bowling Green finished 0-1-1 at Northern Michigan Oct. 19-20. It was the second-consecutive road trip for the Falcons to begin the 2001-2002 season. BGSU lost 2-1 Oct. 19 when NMU's Chad Theuer scored with just over 13 seconds remaining in the third period for a Wildcat victory. SR Greg Day scored the lone goal for the Brown & Orange, and his first of the season. On Oct. 20, FR Ryan Minnabarriet scored his first collegiate goal to knot the score 2-2 at 16:24 of the second period. Facing a 3-2 deficit in the third period, FR Colen Pappas notched his first netter at BGSU to tie the score at 3-3. JR Tyler Masters had 36 saves in the Oct. 20 game and was voted Perani Cup Player of the Game.
Ice Breaker Cup (Oct. 12-13)
Bowling Green began its 2001-2002 campaign by travelling to Orono, Maine, for the Ice Breaker Cup at the University of Maine. BGSU lost to #8 Maine on Oct. 12, 9-1. SO defenseman Brian Escobedo scored Bowling Green's lone goal at 18:41 of the second period. Mark Wires and Tyler Knight assisted on the goal. On Oct. 13, BGSU rebounded with a 1-1 tie against #13 Clarkson and earned a third-place finish via a shootout. SO forward D'Arcy McConvey scored both the regulation goal at 16:37 of the third period and the shootout goal.
