TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team completed a successful weekend at the Birney Tennis Foundation/Rocket Indoor Sunday (Nov. 4). The three-day tournament was held at Laurel Hill Tennis Club.
BGSU won a pair of doubles flights and one singles crown at the tourney, which included competitors from four Big Ten schools (Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State and Northwestern), one school from the Big East (Notre Dame) and one Conference USA member (DePaul), in addition to the Falcons and host Toledo.
In singles action, junior Peter Gardonyi captured the title at the C Flight, defeating senior Mike Kossoff in three sets in an all-BGSU final.
Gardonyi teamed with senior Ed Kuresman to win the title at the C Flight in doubles. That duo went 3-0 in the four-team, round-robin flight. (All of the other flights utilized a bracket format).
In the A Flight in doubles, the team of sophomore Joel Carney and junior Geoff Hiscox went 3-0 to claim a title.
Other notable performances by Falcon competitors included several of junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo's matches at the top singles flight. Lopez-Acevedo lost in a third-set tiebreaker to Northwestern's Jackie Jenkins, who is ranked among the nation's top 100 in the ITA preseason rankings. The Falcon junior came back to post a win over McGuire of Michigan State, and a straight-sets victory over Notre Dame's Aaron Talarico.
"We had an awesome showing this weekend," said BGSU head coach Jay Harris. "We beat every school in the tourney at least once, and were undefeated against Notre Dame in six matches.
"We also won all our matches against the two Michigan schools (3-0 vs. Michigan State, 1-0 against Michigan), and won three of the six flights at the tournament.
"This is a great way to end our fall season."
The Falcons went 6-1 against DePaul opponents, 2-1 vs. Illinois competitors, 5-4 against Toledo and 3-3 vs. Northwestern in the tournament.
BGSU has completed the fall portion of the season, and the Falcons are now idle from competition until a Jan. 19, 2002, dual match at Indiana.
