Fairbanks, Alaska - A solid opening and final period performance by Bowling Green didn't make up for a five-goal outburst in the second period by host Alaska Fairbanks Friday night in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association matchup won by the Nanooks, 6-2. There were 3,297 in attendance at the Carlson Center.
In the first period, both teams came out aggressive, yet the first penalty didn't come until 13:42 when BGSU's Colen Pappas was called for interference. The Falcons killed off the penalty, though, as did the Nanooks against Bowling Green when the Falcons had the extra man for the last 1:16 of the first period.
Before that, though, is when UAF scored its first goal of the game from Scott Vockeroth at 17:22. Cramer Hickey and Tom Herman assisted on the even-strength goal to give the home team just a 1-0 lead heading into the lockeroom at the end of the period.
Alaska Fairbanks built on the lead in the second period, however, with five unanswered goals, starting with the only power play goal of the game off of the stick of Jared Sylvestre at 1:46. It was his first of two goals on the night. The next four goals for the Nanooks came within a five-minute window.
"The second and third goals put us back on our heels," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers. "It was certainly a poor effort in the second period. However, we won the third period."
Sophomore D'Arcy McConvey finally put the Falcons on the board at 14:20 in the second period with a backhander from above the crease after the puck defected off of a Nanook. It was unassisted and McConvey's third of the season.
Neither team scored for over 19 minutes of the third period before senior Greg Day scored at point-blank range off of a Grady Moore assist. Day's goal extended his scoring streak to five games, tying a season-high, and his goal streak to two.
UAF (10-7-0 overall, 6-7-0 in the CCHA) outshot Bowling Green 43-26 for the game and were 1-for-3 on the power play. BGSU was 0-for-4 on its power plays. UAF's Preston McKay allowed just two goals in 60 minutes with 24 saves while Masters had 37 saves in 60 minutes of work.
"UAF was the much more sharper team tonight," said Powers. "They were the better team."
Bowling Green drops to 5-10-4 overall, 4-9-2 in the CCHA.
The Falcons finish its first half of the CCHA season with a final game against the Nanooks on Saturday night. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Alaska time, 11:05 EST.
