REVIEWING THE WESTERN MICHIGAN SERIES
Bowling Green beat Western Michigan 4-2 Friday night, and lost 2-1 Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena. BG is currently in 11th place in the CCHA playoff race with 17 points.
WMU's Mike Bishai opened the scoring early in Friday's contest to put the Broncos up 1-0. David Cousineau and Jeff Campbell set up Bishai's 16th of the season.
The Falcons answered four minutes later, with junior Scott Hewson knocking in his seventh of the year. Hewson's first even-strength goal this season was assisted by linemates Greg Day and Ryan Murphy.
Doug Schueller's breakaway goal at 10:42 of the first put BG ahead 2-1. Schueller's second tally of the campaign was unassisted.
The BGSU power play would score its first of two goals of the night at 18:01 of the middle frame. Hewson and Day garnered their second points of the game in setting up Marc Barlow's fourth goal this season.
BG's second score on the man-advantage came off the stick of Ryan Murphy at 6:44 of the third. Barlow and Hewson were awarded assists on Murphy's team leading 20th of the year.
Western Michigan kept pressure on the Falcons and scored midway through the third period to pull within two. Steve Rymsha's man-advantage marker at 13:53 was his 21st of the season. Cousineau and Bishai garnered assists.
WMU netminder Jeff Reynaert stopped 21 shots on the night, while Tyler Masters made 31 saves to earn the victory for BG. Western Michigan went one for seven on the power play, as Bowling Green was successful two times in six chances.
Western Michigan scored first again Saturday night, jumping out to an early two point lead with power-play goals by Brett Mills and Steve Rymsha. WMU's scores came approximately two minutes apart, and on their first two opportunities of the game with the man-advantage.
Bowling Green's Scott Hewson would net his eighth of the year early in the middle frame to pull the Falcons within one. Greg Day intercepted a clearing attempt by a WMU defenseman, and wristed a pass ahead to Hewson, who slid the puck through netmidner Jeff Reynaert's legs.
Tyler Masters stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced, while Jeff Reynaert made 24 saves in net for the Broncos. BG's power play was scoreless in six chances and WMU was successful in two of six opportunities.
THE LAST TIME
Ferris State tied (2-2) and defeated (3-0) the Falcons two weeks ago at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Michigan.
Greg Day scored both BG goals on Friday night, while FSU was led by Scott Lewis' two points (1g, 1a). Tyler Masters stopped 28 Bulldog shots, while Phil Osaer made 30 saves en route to the tie.
Ferris State's offense was spread out Saturday night, with goals from Jason Basile, Rob Lightfoot, and Rob Collins. Osaer halted 23 Falcon shots for the shutout, while his counterpart Masters made 33 saves at the other end of the rink.
FALCON TIDBITS
This past weekend Bowling Green split their first series since the December 8-9 meetings with Nebraska-Omaha. BG beat WMU 4-2 Friday night and fell 2-1 Saturday. The Falcons have won six of their last seven home games, dating back to the December 9th match with UNO.
BGSU's defense only allowed one shot on goal during the second period in Saturday night's game. Tyler Masters became the 23rd netminder in BG history to stop one shot in a period when he made the save. This is not a record, however. Teammate Shawn Timm made zero saves during the third period against Alaska Fairbanks on Nov. 14, 1998.
The Falcon power play has scored at least one goal in 16 of the last 19 contests. BG has successfully converted 27 of their last 121 chances (22.3%) on the man-advantage.
Over the past 15 games, the Falcons have given up 10 goals in the last 91 opponent chances on the man-advantage for a penalty kill percentage of 89%.
Ryan Murphy has scored a point in 16 of his last 20 games. Murphy has 16-9--25 in that span. Murphy is currently tied for 16th in league scoring with 24 points (14-10--24), tied for third in power play goals with seven, and tied for 10th in goals with 14.
Greg Day has a point in 11 of the last 13 matches, and 16 of the last 19. Day has 10 goals, 18 assists (28 points) in his last 19 contests. Day is currently tied for ninth in the league in scoring, with 30 points (15-15--30), tied for seventh in power play goals with six, and tied for seventh in goals with 15.
Scott Hewson is tied for seventh in the CCHA in power play goals with six.
Tyler Masters leads the CCHA in saves with 738 (29.52 per game). Masters is ninth in the league with a goals against average of 2.90.
Only five players have seen action in all 34 contests this year with BG's losing 53 man-games to injuries.
